HP LaserJet 1022 Printer (Q5912A#ABA)

I got this printer at Staples in mid-May. It works very well. I am using this printer w/ my Dell GX280 and Inspiron 4100.
I'm giving 4 stars due to its higher price.
I was looking at the different HP printers and noticed numerous reviews by "golden comet." This reviewer has rated over a dozen HP printers with 5 stars. Just click on "golden comets" other reviews to see. HP should be ashamed of itself!
My printer came with an install CD, version 1. I removed the existing, broken USB laser printer and uninstalled its drivers.
Then I rebooted XP Pro and installed the HP 1022 into the same USB 2 port. I have 8 USB ports connected to my MB and all are in use. XP Pro has been able to manage the devices with no problem UNTIL I tried to install the printer driver for the HP 1022. It did scramble the other USB devices, which I had to individually correct. After 5 hours of driver frustration, I returned the printer.
First, the drivers from the CD would not install -- the install would tell me to turn on the printer (I would) and it would then search for the printer and eventually notify me it could not find a connected printer. I uninstalled version 1 driver and downloaded the June 2005 drivers from HP, expanded it, the newer driver could not see the printer either (I verified the cable was good). So, I used the add printer wizard to get it all to work, TEMPORARILY.
At first, I was able to share the printer and see it from my other XP Pro computers. HOWEVER, after a reboot, the printer was grayed out and the device manager showed it as an UNKNOWN DEVICE. I then uninstalled the drivers, rebooted and installed -- same problem after a subsequent reboot, UNKNOWN DEVICE again. I tried unplugging all other USB devices, no help.
Tech support was closed. There were no posts on the Web.
I gave up!
As a longtime computer technician I've dealt with my share of laser printers. The majority of them seemed to be HP, and I rarely saw any problems in them. After waiting many years to get a personal laser printer, I decided on this one.
The printer is amazingly fast. The quality is also awesome. Graphics and text both come out very sharp. It's also a smaller printer and fits nicely just about anywhere.
The biggest advantage to owning a laser printer like this one is that the toner is good for a few thousand pages. In an inkjet the cartridges are generally rated at 500 pages, but more often than not they die after about 250. Since ink isn't the cheapest thing in the world, a laser printer makes more sense if you do large amounts of text printing. Despite costing over twice as much as a low end inkjet, the savings comes within the first two years of ownership.
If you get this printer you will not regret it, and will wonder how you ever lived with an inkjet for text.
I received the printer within 5 business days. It's really efficient and prints good quality printouts within seconds. No warming up time. I use it at home and suits me well. Only thing I miss is the scanning and photocopying functions of equally-priced multi-function inkjet printers but I wasn't willing to compromise on the print quality.
I'm sure it's a nice printer... However, I was searching for a COLOR laser printer... This one came up on the Amazone search at the top of the list of color laser printers. Only after it had arrived did I realize the error. We returned it, unopened.
After receiving the printer I followed all the directions for set up, hit the switch and watched the first page get half way through when it died. No useful information comes with the product to help so I had to go to the HP web site. Their on line diagnostic system polled the printer and then looped back to the start page half a dozen times and never gave any info. Called the listed number only to get recording stating the office hours had just ended for the day... 24/7 tech support?
The next day I called the "HP invent" number and yep, you guessed it, hello Bombay! After ten minutes of "is it pluged in?" and "did you put paper in the printer?" questions I was told it must be broken and that they would be happy to send me a reconditioned unit in a week or so. My other option was to take it to a local HP repair center which I did. After three days of no action and several follow up phone calls I was told it was broken and that it would have to go back to HP as there were too many things that were not working and that the local repair center would not be sent the parts by HP because of the type of problems. But not to worry, I would probably receive a nice refurbished unit in about 5 to 7 days even though I did pay full price for a new one. Let the buyer beware, no help from HP when you really need it!
If I ever get the printer back and working I'll let you know how it works.
This is a great printer, easy setup, fast, and quality is sufficient.
The Good:
- super fast printing
- almost perfect print output (super dark black & wide range of greys)
- compact size, won't overwhelm your desk
- connects by USB port
The Bad:
- noisy when printing (whirring motor)
- manual feed holds only a few sheets or a couple of envelopes
- usb port issues (this can be fixed, see below)
- connects by USB port and nothing else
This laser printer is the best value for its performance and output. I had a LaserJet 6P which is a dinosaur now, still works perfect but doesn't understand PostScript3. I got tired of printing Japanese text by first having to make a pdf and then print. Now I can print directly to the printer. The text is near perfect on a scale of 1-5, i'd say 4.5. Unless you are going to buy a $600 Ricoh, you should really consider this printer solely based on its speed and text output. Even compared to other $300 models, this printer can hold its own and may even be better in some cases. It is kind of noisy when it prints- a deep whirring noise - it's bearable but should be mentioned. The manual feed can only hold a thin amount which could be a problem for some people who are going to be printing onto a lot of envelopes. And unfortunately you can't load envelopes into the main compartment. Also the actual printing of envelopes can be annoying, you have to press the button on the printer before it prints any envelopes and you have to do it for each single one - there might be a way around this but I haven't figured it out yet.
The USB issue:
yes, HP tech support can be frustrating as with any company. But my experience wasn't as horrible as others here have had. I received two follow up phone calls, even one from an HP technical engineer about this usb issue::
through trial & error, here is what I did to make it work:
If you are having problems connecting the USB printer to your computer, i.e. WinXP won't recognize the printer, you need to disable the USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller. For some reason, on some computers running WinXP, the USB printer port is recognized as an "Unknown Device." It affects any USB port, doesn't matter if it's USB 2.0 w/Firewire or an older port. It can be fixed easily with a little tweak. I'm sure a lot of people have returned the printer b/c they thought they couldn't print or it was incompatible. Not everything works perfectly straight out of the box, what fun would that be?...
You may also have the same problem if you plan to connect the printer to a router or print server. I have a wireless Linksys Print Server and it does not recognize the USB printer. I have asked Linksys to update their Firmware. When it will happen? who knows.
Keep in mind this is a brand new model for HP and issues will arise they may not have the needed tech support yet. Notwithstanding, for this price and excellent output, I think it's worth it.
Since the printer has 2 tray's you can print prescriptions on prescription paper and easily change to A4 when needed.
Due to its small size the printer does not take much space on the desk.
The printer prints fast so patient's don't have to wait for it to warm up to get their prescription.
I have owned nothing by HP laser printers because of their great reliability and quality. When I read the other reviews I was skeptical of them since people like to slam products just for fun. However this printer is an absolute mess. The driver problems are severe. We could not get this printer to work with any of our 3 office computers runnind Windows XP. Basically it decides to quit printing pages and instead prints random junk. The printer ships with outdated 8 month old drivers and the newer drivers on the HP website fail to download properly. The printer is also very noisy.
I see there are some conflicting reviews about this printer, but I guess as always it depends on who is using the printer and what they're using it for. I use this printer in my home office for personal and very light business use, meaning I don't print more than about 10 or 15 pages per day. In this capacity, I've been thrilled with it so far.
The set-up was so easy---about five minutes to put everything together, Windows XP recognized it right away and the software only took seconds to install. I've had no problems with it now after using it daily for nearly three weeks. To me, it's fast, easy and high-quality, just like I would expect from HP.
I started using this with my practice, the double tray feature was the attraction, for regular paper and then scripts. I am wasting too much paper with the scripts- sometimes 3/4 of the page I throw away!!! I still have the printer for the 8-1/2 X 11 stationary, but my scripts have gone to a thermal Star TSP800. And I don't have to buy cartridges anymore, doubled my savings
After researching laser printers by HP, I settled on this model, and I couldn't be happier. As others have said, it's a little noisy, but for what it does, I find it perfectly acceptable. I was a little worried by some of the other reviews concerning the compatibility of this printer model and Windows XP, but after installing the printer exactly as specified in the instructions, it runs perfectly. This is a great first laser printer for home office use. It's easy to use, the toner cartridge is easy to install, and it prints very fast with great quality. I am very pleased. And as always, Amazon's service is great.
I could not install this printer because of a false jammed paper signal. Turns out the factory turns the jammed paper recovery off to increase printer speed. What a stupid idea. Accordingly, I could not recover from this false signal; had to return printer. Also, searching on the web I discovered that many people had the same problem with other than the 1022 HP model. In addition, was unable to get help from HP. Also, software from printer did not play well with my XP system, had warning that printer software was not compatible with XP.
Great printer. Faster and less tempramental than my old HP 5p.
Shipping response was fast. Total purchase Experience was exellent.
I haven't had any problems with it. That's the bottom line. It does exactly what it says it will do and does it well. The printing is excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if I needed two printers.
I have had my 1022 for about 9 months now, and have yet to have any sort of problems and I'll never buy another inkjet. It prints quickly, and while it lacks a duplex unit, the driver does support a sort of make-shift duplex printing. Select double sided printing, and print. It prints one side of all pages, then you can put the stack back in the printer without changing the orientation and hit one button on the printer to print the opposite sides. No need to remember how to manually print alternate pages in reverse order and so forth...saves me so much ink and paper. (This works on my mac. I assume it also works on windoze.)
Also, I would like to point out I have printed over a ream of paper and haven't needed a new cartidge and have no signs of ink shortage.
Running Windows XP; SP2; on a single Gateway Profile computer. Microsoft Office 2003.
I read earlier reviews and it would appear that this printer either works for you and gets 5 stars, or doesn't work and gets 1 star. There is little in between.
We bought it about three months ago as a replacement for an old HP 4P that finally died. The difference is remarkable. The 1022 installed quickly (USB); has a small footprint; prints the first page of a job very quickly; is fast; relatively quiet; prints cleanly; handles paper well; does envelopes (one at a time). But I would stress that we use it lightly, perhaps a few pages a day and I can't comment on how it would stand up under very heavy use.
Note that a new cartridge is about 1/3 of the cost of an entire new printer.
Still, we recommend it.
This seems to be a very good printer, had a few problems trying to set it up since I already own a HP Laser Printer 1020. Once I uninstalled the 1020, it worked fine. HP should fix this bug not certain how this would work if you have both the printers on one network.
But this printer does not work with wireless print servers or at least the 3 that I tried: Netgear WGPS606, Linksys WPS54G, US Robotics USR5436. I tried numerous updates to the install software, the firmware and even disabling all the security to my wireless network. I think it has something to do with the printer, because I can get my Epson Injet to work fine, instantly after going through the set up wizards. On the HP website it states that the 1022 comes with an optional print server. In theory this printer should work with another brand of print server, but it doesn't seem to. It seems they have done some firmware updates to get the print server to work with their own brand of wireless printservers. If wireless printing is a must don't buy this printer, unless you purchase the optional wireless printserver integrated into the printer. I cannot attest that it really works, but soon will find out. By the way I do computer installation and hardware testing.
*Also note that the 1020 also doesn't work with wireless print servers.
I have had great experience with this printer. I even bought a jet direct card for it, and and it works great. I recently installed XP 64-bit only to find there were no drivers for this printer supported. However, I used the HP4L driver and it works good enough for my purposes.
...and I do mean it works. I'm planning to buy this printer for my home PC because I've been using this model daily at work for about 10 weeks. I print a high volume at work - approximately 1/2 a ream of paper every day over a 9-10 hour period. I use an entire toner cartridge about every 10 working days. The HP Laserjet 1022 has been a champ, printing mainly on standard printer stock, but also various Avery 8.5x11 label sheets - with multiple runs thru the printer, the occasional envelope, and some two-sided pages as well. The prints are uniformly crisp and clean until the toner begins to run out; by removing and shaking the cartridge, then re-inserting it, i've been able to get an extra day's printing out of each cartridge, roughly another 100-200 sheets. And it prints so fast!
I didn't set up the printer myself - our IT tech did; but it took him only a few minutes, and it's running fine on my WinXP Pro operating system; I expect it to run equally well on my Win2K Pro O/S at home.
I bought this item for printing chemistry journal articles for graduate school. I wanted something reasonably fast and economical. I distinctly remembered as an undergrad trying to print a 30 page article on my HP PSC 2110 and waiting forever.
This seems like a good printer. Setup was a breeze. Envelopes are easily done, although it feels like they aren't as gracefully handled as in the PSC2110 (apples and oranges comparison, though). The printouts look great. I'm very pleased with my purchase. HP printers have never let me down.
I have used an HP LaserJet 1022 at my desk for the past nine months. I print about 75 - 100 pages per day average. I haven't had a single problem yet with the printer. I think it prints extremely well, hasn't jammed ever, and is one of the most reliable printers I've ever used!
I have been very impressed by this printer for the price. It zips through pages and looks a lot better than the Brother and Samsung purchased by our office. I am using it on Mac OS 10.4.7 & 10.3.9, but installations at the office in 2 Dell XP Pro PCs went without a hitch. The noise level strikes me as pretty quiet, especially compared to the old HP LJs that I used to support.
If you do a lot of printing, step up to the LJ1320. It's faster and has a 5,000 page cartridge availble that lowers toner cost to less than 2.5cents per page. The 1022 only has a 2000 page cartridge available. The 1320 goes on sale for only a hundred dollars more than the 1022.
The HP LaserJet 1022 is a delight, especially for someone like me who was used to the much older HP Laserwriter TN series, a slower (though quieter) workhorse. The LaserJet 1022 is compact, efficient and easy to use. Others have complained of the printing noise levels, but I haven't found that to be an issue. The only small adjustment I've had to make is, because it doesn't have a paper drawer (like the older model I had), if paper isn't placed precisely in the feeder, it's a bit temperamental and, instead of printing, will make an irritating clicking noise. All in all, though, it's a great printer and a good value.
This printer has now been in service for a couple of months at my house. It is extremely fast and performs with great print quality. The grey scale reproduction is good, but not great. Considering the price of this "GEM" from HP, the quality is outstanding.
We run a small business which involves a lot of everyday printing. Having used inkjet printers for years, the improvement in speed is amazing. We are saving money by not buying so much ink. The toner seems to last a long time. Would buy it again.
For modest printing needs, this printer is excellent. The output is superb, the price is a bargain, and the response time for printer warm-up, after being in standby mode, is very fast.
The printer has a small footprint, making it ideal for desktop use in home or office. However, the small size was achieved partly by using a smaller toner cartridge, able to print approximately 2,000 pages, about half that of larger cartridges. So, if your printing needs are modest, this printer is highly recommended.
My wife always had the laser printers and I kept using inkjets etc for the color. Finally after much wasted ink and many frustrations with poor printouts and lousy color, I gave up on the several inkjets I have had and decided, 'who needs color' anyway for the little I do with it. It just wasn't worth the frustration. This is my first laser and I picked one that would not be too high end but I thought might be reliable. I have had it some time now and must say that it is easy to set up and use and has thus far given reliable high quality printouts. Finally I can print when I want, without cleaning heads or changing a million ink cartridges. My wife has another HP laser printer and it has been problem free as well...for a very long time. In an age of rapid obsolescence, HP printers have been a bright spot for us.
When my boyfriend and I bought this we were looking for a quick, good quality black laser printer to print his law school documents because I decided I send most of my pictures out to websites to be printed. This printer far exceeds our expectations. The warm up time is much quicker than most reviews we read. The quality of print is wonderful. The set up is extremely easy. The size of this printer is amazing. It is so small and fits so well on our computer desk.
I HIGHLY recommend!!!
This printer will not print a merged document without hitting the paper feed button between every page or envelope. Believe me - this is a huge issue if you do any mailings or merged document stuff at all.
After going back and forth with HP (I thought for sure I must be overlooking some trick) they agreed it simply doesn't work in this capacity.
What a waste of money.
Excellent laser printer. Small footprint, good print quality, easy setup. Works seamlessly with Macs.
I have already run over 1,000 pages through this printer in the couple of weeks I have had it installed. The printer has functioned well and is quick - as advertized. When installing I had one small glitch with the USB port, but it was easily overcome.
I would recommend this printer for the following reasons, small size, rapid warmup and printing, ability to handle a variety of paper and envelope sizes, good technical support. It is a little noisy, however, but nothing that is distracting.
HP printers are like buying a Honda. Value for dollar and trouble-free. They just work and they always will. I've had years and years of trouble free printing with the 1012 model and now this one. Like everyone said here - it's compact, fast and the quality is better than you'd expect for this price. We feed it ream after ream of paper and it just does what it's supposed to. Excellent, excellent value - I'll buy another one if I have to but I'll probably never need to. The 1012 is still going strong.
Just received mine Feb 2007. First the quickness from Amazon was amazing. Came perfectly wrapped and within a few days. I plugged it in, put the disc in, and within only a few minutes my computer installed it and put it as my default printer without even a hiccup. I had a test page printed within no time and am VERY VERY pleased. There was no written manual, just some pictures to follow and was easy! It works perfect!!!! The only thing you should know is that it didn't come with a USB printer cable (how much can that cost them, $1?). Glad I bought it- very happy!
I needed to replace my 1995 purchased LaserJet 4L. It printed at a speedy 4ppm that were crisp and clean, and I wanted a replacement to fit the 'foot print' of my 4L. My search was narrowed by size and by my printer need. After a thorough search and careful readings of reviews of many brands, I chose the HP LaserJet 1022.
I made an excellent decision, because it performs exactly as advertised. It has worked flawlessly and I highly recommend this printer.
Small footprint, and it's very fast. Holds 250 sheets of paper, which is nice. All in all, a very nice machine. The toner cartridge is smaller than previous Laserjets, but I haven't had it long enough yet to know if that's going to be a problem.
Small enough to fit in the roll out shelf on the bottom of the computer hutch, fast enough to print in a jiffy, clean clear print, easy to set up, prints paper, envelopes and cards, easy to set up. What's not to like?
We bought this printer to replace our HP laserjet 1017 that we were passing on to someone else to use. It's compatible with our Mac running OS 10.4.8 (if anyone needs to know). We like the small footprint & you can fold up the trays for storage & prevention of dust accumulation. We only use it for home use, so it's not under great strain, but for the price, it's great for home office use.
I just got off the phone with HP tech support and was told that they DO NOT SUPPORT PRINTING WIRELESSLY for this printer.
Printing to the 1022 via Airport Express from my PowerBook G4 and iBook G4 has been completely hit-or-miss for me, even after trying some of the cooky techniques that seem to work for some folks (e.g., "Plug it directly into your computer, then to Airport Express, then unplug your Airport Express, then unplug your printer, then plug your Airport Express back in, etc. etc.).
My older LaserJet 1200 has been terrific printing via Airport Extreme (802.11g -- white flying saucer) but the 1022 has been a pain. I'm returning mine.
(To be fair, the 1022 prints beautifully and amazingly quickly when it's hooked up directly to my computer's USB port.)
UPDATE: I just replaced this printer with the slightly more expensive HP P2015D Monochrome Laserjet Printer, and the new printer works perfectly with the Airport Express, and the drivers installed without any problem. (I'm loving the P2015d's paper-saving duplex capabilities, too.)
I agree with others who've rated this excellent - it's a quiet, fast, inexpensive laserjet. But its USB port will not work with any print server besides HP's (I tried 2 other brands, and neither would see it connected). The cheapest I've found their JetDirect 175x print server is $90, so if you're planning to use this on a soho LAN anytime in the future, spring for the 1022n instead - it's just $70 more than the 1022, and has a jetdirect print server built in (besides the USB port).
Low cost and really fast. My kids now prefer it to our inkjet with the expensive print cartridges...
I have an HP Business Inkjet 1100 - not even listed on Amazon now, so I'm posting my warning on a similar product. The printer worked great with Windows XP. I was very happy with it, except for the fact that plastic paper guides broke off soon after purchase. BUT, when I upgraded to VISTA, I was so disappointed with HP tech service! I can't use the printer because HP has not released an updated driver - and apparently doesn't intend to do so. There is no excuse for this. Why should I have to throw away a perfectly good 3-year-old printer because HP's support is so bad? Canon, on the other hand, provided an easy-to-install on-line driver for my 6-year-old scanner. It now works beautifully with Vista.
I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANOTHER HP PRODUCT.
Fast, fast fast! Love the speed. I've never had a printer that was so fast. It was easy to install, too.
This printer is great in my home office. I have shared it to the network and macs and pc's both print without any problems. Quality and speed are great.
This is our second printer like this, it is fast and we do check printing so it has to be reliable.
I'm not a computer geek. I'm looking for decent quality at a good price. I found it! I have had this printer for 18 months. I waited until now to evaluate it. I have had ZERO problems. It's a basic HP printer-works great-no paper jams, ever! Economical--I use it daily at least 50 times-toner lasts 6 months at a shot. Print quality is straight up=black and white-just what I need for the job.
great for black & white only printer - quick, quite, and fast
The HP1022 Laserjet is a reliable workhorse for my home office. Also have a HP1012 which is an earlier model and it continues to work well for over three years now. Great price and great performance. Tried the Dell 1710 and returned it because is not well designed to do two sided manual printing due to excessive paper curl and faulty paper feeding. Dell was great in processing the return however. Stick with the experts in laser printing.
I got this printer at Staples in mid-May. It works very well. I am using this printer w/ my Dell GX280 and Inspiron 4100.
I'm giving 4 stars due to its higher price.

We run a small business which involves a lot of everyday printing. Having used inkjet printers for years, the improvement in speed is amazing. We are saving money by not buying so much ink. The toner seems to last a long time. Would buy it again.
This printer has now been in service for a couple of months at my house. It is extremely fast and performs with great print quality. The grey scale reproduction is good, but not great. Considering the price of this "GEM" from HP, the quality is outstanding.
Great product, fast and clean copies. Don't know why I waited so long to get it. Very helpful customer service for setting up. Probably could have set-up without help if I had had USB 2 cable. Customer service detected the problem right away.
I had a Brother 2040 before this and there is no comparison. This unit requires less power when it starts up, it is quieter, it prints faster, takes up less space, and puts out great looking documents. I couldn't be happier with it.
The printer worked great when I set it up for my Windows XP desktop..fast, clean prints. I've since upgraded (no, make that downgraded) to Windows Vista and I can't use the printer until HP releases an updated driver. Not entirely HP's fault, but it still is taking too long for them to get this driver updated whereas many of their other LaserJets are already compatible with Vista. I am not impressed.
4 stars for the printer, 1 star for HP's support for it.
Outputs from HP 1022 will not match outputs from HP printers that support PCL 6. Applications that depend on precise print formatting will probably fail.
I have had this printer for over two months now and it is working perfectly. It starts up almost instantly and the pages come out very fast. That is a vast improvement over my old inkjet printer. The print quality is excellent.
My only complaint is with the installation. The installation CD was not able to install this printer on my Windows XP Home system. I received an "UNRECOGNIZED DEVICE" error message. I finally solved the problem by reinstalling the printer manually. I am not sure, but I believe the installation CD was trying to assign this printer to the LPT1 port instead of an USB port. At any rate it started working.
I gave this printer a four star rating. I would have given it a five star rating if there was no installation problem.
