HP LaserJet 3390 All-in-One Printer/Copier/Scanner/Fax (Q6500A#ABA)

The hardware on this printer is excellent. It shares the same toner cartrigde as the 1320. However, the software sucks, sucks, sucks. If you plan on using this with one or two computers in a single room, you should be fine. If you plan on using this in a business environment, you will be stymied.
THIS IS A CONSUMER PRINTER!!!
The HP auto updater can't work with a proxy server.
Their is no fax confirmation for network users.
The printer can only be managed via the USB interface.
Fax logs can only be accessed through the USB interface.
Tech support for this printer is clearly consumer, not business, oriented.
The printer is very fast, very quite, nicely built, integrated handles, solid feeling.
The software is sucks.
If you are using with one or two computers in the same room, you should be very happy.
Having owned an HP 3330 multifunction (from 2002) I thought this new 2006 model can only be better. Well, it is in some ways....I guess.
The 3390 adds duplex printing and has a built-in JetDirect for network based printing and sharing, but other than that it doesn't seem to be any different than the recently discontinued 3380. And for that matter its not a whole lot different than the 4 year old 3330. Fairly sad product innovation on HP's part considering that the competition is offering some credible new features in this class of product.
Comparing the new Brother 8860DN and the HP 3390 side by side proves the Brother is superior in most things. Since this is an HP 3390 review, I'll refer you to my Brother 8860 review for more details.
Its not all doom and gloom with the 3390, I just feel for the $700 price they are asking, HP could have added a bit more innovation.
Things missing from the HP that I wish were included:
1) duplex scanning from document feeder
2) faster scanning (its S-L-O-W)
3) a legal size scan glass (realtors still use legal paper)
4) fax forward to email
Other annoyances:
The 3390 has only been out for a few weeks, however they've already revisioned the software from V1.0 to V1.1 and now V2.0. HP has also released two firmware updates in that tims as well. Sounds good, assuming all problems are resolved, however they are not! In the couple days I used this printer, I found the following issues:
1) the TWAIN interface for the scanner will often give warning messages about the document feeder and these warnings don't make sense. Bypassing them resolves the problem. Plus the TWAIN interface counts the pages backwards (ex: 6 of 2 instead of 2 of 6).
2) I have experienced issues where printing a document from Word will cause all text to be truncated on the paper.
3) TWAIN interface will not work with the Windows XP built-in fax program.
4) If you turn off your 3390 the HP toolbox program will sometimes hang.
So, all in all its a decent machine. For anyone looking for a no nonsense multifunction this will do the job. For $200 less you can also get the Brother 8860 that will do everything the same plus more.
Despite the generally average reviews, I went ahead and purchased the Laser Jet 3390 printer at this time because of the generous HP rebate. If it didn't work I knew that I could obtain satisfaction from Amazon during the first 30 days. I've had it up and running now for two weeks and it performs flawlessly under a system running Windows XP Media Center (really Windows XP Professional).
I had no installation issues other than some confusion with the Twain driver which I resolved without calling India or wherever their help desk is these days. For $350 after the rebate, it's in my opinion a deal worth considering.
I purchased the LJ3390 to replace an existing LJ3320. The $350 rebate available until the end of Oct was the deciding factor as it made the unit a very reasonable purchase.
My main interest in the upgrade was to purchase a network connected printer. Duplex print capability was the other factor that tipped the scale in favour of the LJ3390 over the LJ3052.
I now have 3 desktop and 2 laptop printers all printing successfully. All run XP SP2 and are either connected via a wired or wireless network connection. Software installation went flawlessly.
While I can't comment about HP versus other vendor software, I can say that the LJ3390 software is a major improvement over that of my LJ3320. Scanning is faster by at least a factor of 2X, quite likely more like 3-4X. Printing of complex pages is also much faster, exactly what I would expect from a newer generation print engine and an HP Laserjet printer.
All in all I am very pleased that I upgraded. It has met all my upgrade goals. Printing is faster, scanning is much faster. The network connectivity ensures anyone can print without another machine being forced to be a print server and constantly left on. I haven't played with the fax side yet, but am hoping this finally let's me retire my trusty standalone fax machine.
The printer works on the network fairly nicely.
But HP software, if I may generalize, is baroque in its complexity and unlikely to work.
I bought this unit primarily for its Automatic Document feeder and scanner, but that is a dissapointment. Although it copys double-sided, it cannot scan 2 sided, which is an amazing waste of time as I have to scan each document twice for the even and odd pages, then recombine them by a lot of drag&Drop.
All the hardware exists to make it scan duplex, but HP software isn't ready.
Also I had to have them send me a new Automatic Document Feeder since the original one couldn't tell whether there was paper in the ADF or on the glass. They sent the ADF free and quickly.
I recently purchased the Laserjet 3390 to replace my aging LaserJet 2100 and I couldn't be happier. With the current $[...] rebate this machine is a terrific value, and its performance so far has been stellar.
Print quality is excellent, as is the scan/copy quality from the flatbed. To scan or copy legal-size documents the automatic document feeder must be used, and the quality of the output seems slightly lower than from the flatbed, though still quite good.
As other reviewers have noted, the HP software is another story. I installed the printer to an existing small network, and the software had to be installed twice on each computer (i.e., installed, removed, then reinstalled) before it would function properly. However, after the second installation everything works flawlessly.
My only complaint is with the single-slot manual feed. I've added a second 250-sheet paper tray, which makes this a bit easier to deal with, but it's still a minor annoyance. If HP had incorporated a fold-out manual-feed tray I'd give the 3390 an unqualified 5-star rating. As it is, I'd rate it 4.5 stars.
The product was very easily installed and has performed flawlessly for 3 months. Our usage is 150-200 printed pages, 20-25 faxes, 30-40 scans, and 20-30 copies daily. It functions well in every case. We have not had to replace the shipped cartridge but 1 time so supply utilization seems appropriate for the cost of the unit.
I'd think twice before buying this machine again?
Some frustrations with this machine --
BEWARE if you have any other HP software on your computer --
When I went to install the 3390 software, it looked for other HP software on my computer and then proceeded to install itself as an old HP 1200 printer with no fax or scan functions. It refused to install the 3390 fax & scan software because it said the name of the product was incorrect! After wasting an hour or two reading the manual and trying to figure out what went wrong and uninstalling it 3 times, I had to call HP who ran into the same problem I did. HP had to bring in an expert who had me boot up in 'safe' mode and mess with the registery before the software would install properly. I only wasted about 5 hours on this problem!
The onboard set up menu sucks. The 'reports' could be much better. It wastes a lot of toner printing the HP logo and other stuff you don't need on the "reports".
The "manual" or users guide tells you how to set up, i.e., program in a speed dial number and group faxing but it FAILS to tell you HOW to use speedial or HOW to group fax! And the control panel does not make it intuitively obvious. The user guide leaves out some basic and needed info. And, since this machine costs quite a bit more than a couple of hundred dollars, why the heck can't HP spring for a pre-printed, bound, user guide to come in the box??? -- at least for the fax functions so the user guide can be kept near the machine without having to print it out and go to kinkos to have it bound.
The control panel is misleading. As soon as you put a document in the paper feeder to fax it, the machine begins to run it through BUT the machine then prodeeds to dial the previous phone number before you have a chance to key in a new phone number. The manual does not tell you the order in which you need to be pushing the control panel buttons to make it send the doc to a new fax number rather than just 'redial' even tho there is a separate 'redial' button.
For some reason when I hooked this up to my PC, it screwed with the fonts and line spacing as they appear in documents prepared using WordPerfect.
I bought this just before Thanksgiving and I've already had a problem with the paper feed. Also, if I stop a fax in progress and the document feeder stops with a paper halfway through (not a paper jam), there is no button to make the feeder clear itself. You have to pull the paper out manually and hope you don't tear it. My old Canon had a button that would run the paper on through the feeder if some function stopped with a paper in the feeder other than a jam. There should be some button to turn on the feeder rolls long enough to run the paper through.
I printed a "Fax Send Log" which contains the HP logo and prints a 'background' for no purpose that I can see except to waste toner.
AND -although the sent faxes appear in chronological order onscreen on the PC the 3390 prints the sent faxes listed in random order with no rhyme or reason -- not by date, not by size, not by phone number -- and certainly not in the order the faxes were sent. I've found no way to make it print the list in order -- either by date or phone number.
The 3390 does not give you a choice of cover pages when sending a fax directly from the PC -- there's only the default (that I have found) and it provides no options as to the content of the single default cover page.
When scanning, this machine does not automatically detect that a document is legal size. You have to remember to change the 'paper' setting to legal even just to scan (rather than copy) a legal size document. I've had some problems with the machine saying it was waiting for the PC before it could begin to scan despite the fact that the PC WAS connected and working and the PC and 3390 had been in communication 1 minute earlier.
The machine won't let you choose to print only a 'fax sent' report with all outgoing faxes (which I need with each outgoing fax in order to keep it in my file to prove the fax went successfully). If this feature is turned on, you get a "call report" with each sent fax, each received fax and each error fax whether in or outging. What a waste of paper and toner.
"Fax Call Report" is a stupid and misleading title for the report (for incoming and outgoing faxes) and each 'report' wastes lots of toner by printing the HP logo and the model # of this machine on EVERY report!
I've only had the 3390 for 3 weeks or so and would be a LOT happier with it if HP actually put the customer first rather than pasting its logo on everything the machine prints so the toner is used up quicker and I have to buy more from HP. The software that comes with it leaves a lot to be desired as does the onboard 'menu'.
And, the machine is not 'white' it is 'putty' colored which I don't particualrly like. HP should take a lesson from Apple about color! Pure white is better than putty but colors would be nice.
I'm not a computer geek but I can usually get around a computer OK and I've installed all my other printers, fax machines, scanners, networking, etc. but either I just cannot find the controls and adjustments for this machine OR, more likely, HP needs to make the 3390 substantially more user friendly and add adjustable options for the reports printed rather than offer only a default.
I suggest not paying full price if you want this machine. Wait till it's on sale if you gotta have it! I'm going to go take a look at Canon & Brother and other brands before it's too late to return this one to find one that's more user friendly.
This is a great product, but there is one drawback if faxing is important to you. It just won't receive faxes automatically. I have an HP Officejet 7310 which worked without a hitch receiving faxes automatically detecting an incoming fax when my answering machine picked up. However with the 3390 it just won't pick up an incoming fax call. I've tried rebooting, reinitializing, unplugging all my phones on the line, even taking off the answering machine to no avail. I am really disappointed as in all other respects this is a great machine. The scanning, copying is great. Love the printing speed and the duplex printing feature and networking feature is great. It's fast and quiet. All in all a great All-In-One but the inability to automatically receive faxes is a show stopper that means it's going back. I'm not the only one who has experienced this problem. It's come up on HP's business forum on their web site--you can do a google search.
This is my 2nd multifunction printer. My previous one, which cost about the same, made by another company, had all sorts of configuration problems. Even after configuring, things had to be re-done. This HP Multifunction works great right out of the box. Had it about 2 months and no problems whatsoever.
The 3390 was easy to set up and register, but when I investigated extended warranties I found that I could purchase only two more years coverage from HP, not one more year, and the tab was almost half the price of the 3390. So no go. Our previous 3330 failed after a couple of years and wasn't worth repairing. If we have the same experience with the 3390, we will be off HP forever. Other than that the machine works fine and meets all of our needs. However, it seems a bit loud when running.
I got the printer/copier/scanner going and it has been a delight. It is working well in a small business setting, and I am very happy with the speed and quality of the printed products.
However, that doesn't negate the fact that I spent over four hours attempting to install the product on a MS Windows Small Business Server. I received errors that I need to install a file that wasn't in the installation disk. It wasn't clear to me if it was a Windows file or a HP file. Ultimately, I started all over and went to the HP website and used the downloaded drivers from there, and I was able to get it working.
HP gets '0' stars for installation help. But the product works great once you get it working.
I had this sent free shipping. As usual Amazon sent me an email saying it would be 2 weeks and it showed up in 3 days. I think they just do that to try and get you to buy better shipping.
Printer works great! Quick, quiet and has very nice features. I love that it prints on double side, I just wish it could do double side copying like the brother. My only other thing I would like is if the flatbed was legal size. But over all, I give this an 8 out of 10 score.
This is a truly excellent multifunction machine, as one would expect from HP. The price was the best on the internet especially with free shipping. The only problem is that the multifunction capability cannot be fully exploited on a computer using the Vista OS until HP releases new software, expected in late spring of 07.
I bought this printer for my office. I'm having a rough time with printing envelopes. I cannot put in more than one envelope at a time. It's frustrating. Also, sometimes the machine just freaks out and it's a whole bunch of pressing the cancel button to get back on track. Haven't used it for scanning! I guess if I had to do it over, I may NOT have purchased this machine. It's good for BASIC printing...and basic printing alone and I would have been happier with a simple laser printer rather than this gizmo that acts up frequently... The paper feeder on the top gets hungry at times and you wonder what's going on...
The document feeder leaves a little something to be desired, setting up the network printing required a little googling, and some of the software that came with the printer was hogging all of my CPU until I disabled it. Other than that, I've loved the features and quality of this printer.
I have used every feature of this printer with absolute delight except for the scanning software. The printer came with a defective cartridge which HP was very quick to overnight a replacement for it and even followup if it fixed my problem. Great. Faxing from machine - awesome. Faxing from PC - Outstanding. Printing - Very crisp pages with everything I had expected from 1200 dpi.
Now why such a great machine such as this one ships out with crappy scanning software is beyond me. I guess one can purchase different scanning software for it, but it was supposed to be part of the package. That's why I'm giving it a 4 stars instead of 5. I like it so much that I only dinged it by one star because of the software. I wanted to go towards a paperless office by scanning everything and storing it in digital format, but having second thoughts after I had to deal with the Readiris software that comes with it.
If you don't care about scanning documents much, then by all means, do buy this machine. If scanning is a big part of the purchase, then I don't know if I would recommend it.
Performs like every HP product I've ever had. Not fancy or flashy. It just performs. Easy to install, to network, and the copies are clear and clean. Scanning is easy and we love this machine. It is just perfect for our small office.
Would purchase again.
