Review: Canonized
by: Arthur R. Angel on date: February 20, 2007
The high ratings for this printer in various surveys are well deserved. It does everything extremely well, and quickly--printing, scanning, faxing, and photo printing. The photos are clear and sharp and print quickly. With a one-year old granddaughter, I have been busy printing digital photos when I am not using the Canon for my home law office. I previously had two HP multi-functions over the last 10 years and thought that they were quite good, but this Canon is great. I recommend it highly.

Review: Customer Service outshines product
by: A. Cunningham on date: February 20, 2007
After researching all-in-one printers, the general consensus was that the Canon MP830 was the best, and Amazon.com offered the best price. The free shipping offer made me a little nervous, but the order came in less than a week - very impressive. The new Canon printer, however was defective (the auto feeder switch was broken and would send an error message any time we would copy something). So, in my mind, a defective machine should be fixed by the manufacturer. I called the Canon customer service rep. Although very polite, the rep assured me they could only send a "reconditioned machine" as a replacement or we could take it to the closest Canon repair center which was no where near "close." Since I had paid very handsomely for a NEW machine, I was not satisfied, and was told this is a company policy for all machines, thank you very much. The rep suggested I contact Amazon and see what their return policy was. That was the best advice he gave me. Amazon set up delivery of a replacement machine -NEW- (which, again, arrived within 1 week) and said I just needed to return the old machine within 30 days. The web site even allowed me to schedule a UPS pick up of the old machine - free shipping as well - very convenient! The new machine works fine, but it was Amazon's customer service that made me a VERY SATISFIED CUSTOMER!

Review: So far, can't say enough good things ...
by: R. Noel on date: February 20, 2007
Thus far, very pleased with this unit which I purchased after consulting with Consumer Report which gave it a top rating. Have previously always purchased HP printers but decided to follow the lead of CR and the many other positive reviews here on Amazon. Honestly, I cannot think of one negative thing to say; it seems all of the positive things to say have already been said in the other reviews here ...

Review: Great all-in-one printer but it is a major ink hog ! And you'll pay dearly for ink !
by: Tony Polito on date: February 25, 2007
This all-in-one printer looks very stylish and so far (after 4 months) it runs great. The software is a little clunky, it is a USB-based printer, and when you switch ports, it gets confused. It also didn't work well with my USB port board, I had to plug it into an OEM port. Overall, I like the unit a great deal.

The big catch is the ink. Currently there is no generic ink available and you can't refill the used cartridges. Canon embeds a chip in the cartridges to defeat using a refilled cartridge. The printer takes FIVE cartridges that cost $15 each and the printer basically burns right through them. I've owned it four months, I don't print all that much and I have probably forked out well over $200 for ink already. In fact, I am writing this because I was just informed by the printer software that I have THREE cartridges that (again) need replacing.

Canon has offered their rationale for this (to prevent users from buying sub-par ink products) ... but the reality is they're just milking users as though they are there merely to be Canon's cash cows.

Eventually some generic ink manufacturer is going to get around to reverse engineering these chips. Then they'll embed a legal and technical "work-around" chip into a generic ink cartridge product ... whether Canon likes it or not ... but until then, be prepared to pay dearly for ink if you buy this printer.

Review: great machine
by: C. Villarreal on date: February 28, 2007
I love this all-in-one. I have two of these, one at home and one at work. I also have an $800 color laser printer but this canon is still my favorite. It does use a bit of ink but if you know how to shop, you can buy them at a decent price and I change the black ink about every two months and have only changed the color once since I bought my first one a year ago. This is not bad considering the toner for the laser is at least $80. I was looking for a color copier for work and the lasers being as pricey as they are I just bought another Pixma since I really like the one at home. I really recomend it. Oh the first one I bought I sent back because it was defective but the replacement has not failed in over a year.

Review: Cheap junk
by: Alan Mead on date: March 1, 2007
We replaced an HP G55 multifunction with the Canon MP830 based on good reviews and because it was $100 cheaper than the comparable HP multifunction. We use the MP830 to print school papers, artwork for kid's projects, make copies, and occasionally scan pictures or documents. We rarely print pictures so the built-in support for printing pictures from media is not an advantage for us.

After less than a year, I have several complaints. First, the MP830 takes a surprisingly long time to turn on or switch functions. The mechanics are also fairly loud. I find I avoid using it for these reasons (and those below).

Second, the MP830 is relatively complicated to operate. Operations, like choosing fast/draft mode, that took a single button on the HP G55 take several steps on the MP830. Learning to use the MP830 features is a significant chore, particularly scanning.

Third, the ADF doesn't work very well with the bundled scanning software, which reduces one of the big advantages of the MP830.

Fourth, the MP830 goes through ink very very quickly. I estimate that we have already spent about $100 more on ink as compared to our old G55.

Fifth, the MP830 is not very robust. If any of the ink cartridges run out, or if THE MP830 THINKS that they have run out, then you cannot use any function. For example, if you run out of magenta then you cannot make Black & White copies nor use the scanner. And our printer will sometimes refuse to recognize the cartridges, even immediately after installing brand-new Canon products.

And finally, while every store carries HP ink, we have never found a big-name retailer locally who carries ink for the MP830. So when we run out of ink, we face a few days waiting for a replacement to be shipped to us... and did I mention that it runs out frequently? And that you cannot do anything once any ink runs out?

I would NOT recommend buying the MP830.

I have never owned a printer that does photos before. I bought this because I needed a new AIO for wife's office. Tried printing a photo using the sample paper provided and I was blown away. Needs some color tweaking - but quality was as good as my Kodak printer and the Kodak web site.

by: ABCServices.US on date: March 9, 2007
The Canon software includes "Presto! Page Manager", which allows you to "stack" individual files into a single PDF, or you can scan items into a PDF. You can combine file types, i.e. JPG, TIFF, DOC, PDF, etc. into a single file. It's Fantastic! Also included in Presto! Page Manager is the option to use OmniPage OCR, but I don't have the patience to work with it. OmniPage works great with a strictly-text document image, but when graphics or tables are mixed in, it takes some time to transform the original scanned image into a Word doc.

Review: ink gobbler
by: J. howgate on date: March 12, 2007
I can't believe the ink this printer goes through. My printing volume is pretty consistent and after only 2.5 months with new cartridges for $75 I am already warned about low ink level on one cartridge. I can't find the cartridges discounted. If I have to buy cartridges quarterly or even just 3 times a year I soon will have spent more than I paid for the printer.

Review: Canon Pixma MP830 Office All-In-One Printer
by: Stephen Deutsch on date: March 10, 2007
This all-in-one is everything I had hoped for and more. After having only HP printers up to now, and having great success and satisfaction with them, I presumed I would be getting another HP product. Instead, after considerable research and "reviewing" the reviews, I decided upon this Canon. It was simple to set up, had very clear directions, and flawlessly does what it is supposed to do. And for what it's worth, it's very smart looking. My only complaint would be its very large footprint but then what can one expect from an all-in-one. I'd recommend this product to anyone, in a New York minute!

Review: Not Networkable!
by: S. Hochman on date: March 16, 2007
For some reason Canon has not gotten with the program. Brother, HP and most of the other companies realize that a lot of people have home networks, and as a result people do not want an old-fashioned printer that needs an expensive print server to setup.
It would be nice if Canon got this message as well since this printer is no good for networks when for the same price I can get an HP that does everything the MP830 does and can work wirelessly over a network. Also this Canon eats ink. If you plan on getting it you better get ready for frequent store runs.

Review: Great, but the auto-document feeder sucks
by: tim_sf on date: March 19, 2007
I love everything about this machine, but if you need a dedicated fax machine, the auto-document feeder (the paper "container" on the top of the machine that is supposed to let you set and forget) sucks, truly. I just spent 20 minutes faxing something that should have been so easy. The ADF jammed, grabbing multiple pages at the same time, thereby ruining my fax sessions. In all, it took me 4 tries to get my fax through because of the crappy 'auto'-document feeder.

In this regard, HP is much better. While I'm not an HP fan, they have mastered the auto-document feeder. If I need an office machine for faxing primarily, I would look to them.

Review: Duplex and 2 Sided scanning
by: Brian C. Freeman on date: March 25, 2007
The ADF was broken when I got it, but Canon's customer service was excellent and referred me to a local repair shop. Amboy Office Equipment fixed it in 3 1/2 days.

The device works great. The only thing that I'm not used to is the startup time. The 1st page takes a while to load in to the printer before it starts printing. My HP printers were a lot quicker.

Everything works as promised. It was a very good buy for the money.

Scanning both sides with out having to manually do anythings is great!!!

I'll be looking at more canon products in the future.

I hope they add WI-FI in the future.

Review: Good machine, missing cartridge recycling program
by: D. E HIRSCH on date: March 27, 2007
I liked this machine so much, I bought another, so I have one at work and one at home. I even put up with the bug discussed elsewhere on this site where duplex printing consumes lots of color ink for black print to prevent bleed. My big disappointment with Canon was my recent discovery of the lack of a recycling program for these cartridges. It's great that the multiple cartridges saves buying replacements before that color is used up, but this turns into a lot of cartridges going into landfills. Until Canon takes responsibility for this issue, I cannot recommend this machine.

Review: Pleased with reservation!
by: A. Rabold on date: March 28, 2007
The Pixma MP830 is a terrific printer. It does everything well though the color photo printing capability leaves a bit to be desired if you're as picky as I.

The bigest criticisms I have is that it is exceptionally noisey, even when run in "quiet mode" and it does not have the ability to receive faxes directly to your computer, implied but not clearly stated in the advertising. You have to scan them in from hard copy.

Review: Good printer, expensive INK
by: L. J. Torres on date: March 28, 2007
They should give these away, the INK along can cost you over $500 a year depending on used. No aftermarket options, at list w/ chip.
The previous version, the 730 ot 780 are same in quality and fucntions and the Ink is cheaper with aftermarket options at a couple of bucks.

Review: slooooooooooooow as a copier
by: J. Mallory on date: April 2, 2007
I bought this until for its double-sided (non-color) copying ability. And it does that fairly well but it takes several minutes to scan and print each double-sided page (even in non-color mode)! As a general purpose copier, it is useless to me because of this. It does do color copying which could be an advantage if you need that. Did I mention that it's slow? slow slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.

Review: As always, another great machine from Canon
by: J. S. Francis on date: April 2, 2007
Canon has consistently produced a durable printer. This machine does everything you could ask for. The only issue is they have come up with a way, via an electronic chip, to make it so you can only buy their ink. I am sure, given some time, that you will be able to buy some aftermarket inks at a reduced rate. Otherwise, a whole lot of machine for not a whole lot of money.

Review: Great deal on a multifunction printer.
by: Bluto on date: March 30, 2007
We are very impressed with the photo print quality, speed, and ease of use. The multiple copy feed makes it suitable for a home office. We use the fax function only as a back-up, but it's vey good machine for the price!

Review: Good but beware...
by: Working Man on date: March 29, 2007
Nice little package, prints quickley and much quieter than my previous HP model. It looks good and has a menu driven screen. The issues I have with it are the OCR software which is basic at best, the on-screen controls don't work with IE 7 BUT more importantly this machine drinks ink like a Hummer drinks gasoline. Not a good choice if you print a lot.

Review: Love my Canon MP830
by: K. Braswell on date: March 28, 2007
I bought this all-in-one after doing much research. I had a HP that was noisy and shook horribly when making copies so my criteria for a new machine was quiet and no shaking. This machine performs perfectly. It is quiet and efficient and produces excellent quality images. I love all of the functions and the ease of use. Set up was a breeze.

Review: Canon MP830 - Worst office machine I've ever had.
by: A. Drake on date: April 4, 2007
I bought this all in one printer because I had read some good reviews about it... but now I struggle daily to keep from throwing it through the window. The paper in the tray jams on about every 3rd to 5th page. It will not print faxes if ink is low, even though low ink cartriges still have quite a bit of life left in them. There is a long pause between changing from copy setting to fax. It will not fax or print incoming faxes if left on "copy" setting and will not copy if it's on "fax" setting. The quality of the print is good, but very costly in ink consumption. I would not recommend this printer and can not believe it gets such good reviews.

Review: Awesome Printer!
by: Karen L. Kress on date: April 5, 2007
I have been in search of a reasonable printer that does the job I need. This printer, after having used both Epson and HP (which were more expensive), is way beyond my expectations! It's sleek to look at and has so many great features. I work at a small print shop and needed a machine that has copying, printing and scanning capabilities. This model does that and more. The scanner is almost as good as the high end one that we used to have in the shop and it can scan a whole stack of pages and save them to pdf without touching a thing. The prints are very rich looking with the extra black cartridge and the cartridges themselves don't cost an arm and a leg (& they light up, which is cool) and are very easy to replace. I am a very satisfied customer and I will recommend the PIXMA MP830 to everyone I know.

Review: Home Office workhorse
by: E. McDonald on date: April 6, 2007
I have used this printer for almost a year, upgrading from the HP PSC 950. It is FAST, works very well, and uses ink about average amount. Be sure to have extra tanks on hand. Once you get a low ink message, you get about 4-5 days before you have to replace. Once ink runs out of 1 tank, printer will not function! I have purchased three 4-color packs from Amazon in the year I have used it. Photos are clear and crisp, love the multiple paper feed source where 4x6 or full size photo paper can be fed from lower compartment. The sheet feeder is great for copying several pages at a time but I haven't used it much. The card reader reads CF and SD quickly and reliably. The only downside is the size, but you gotta expect that from a multi-function printer.

Review: Swiss-army knife of printers...
by: Christopher M. Griffin on date: April 9, 2007
Fast, do-it-all printer that we are using networked with an Apple Airport Extreme to serve the 4 computers (Macs and PC's) on our home network.

Print quality and speed are excellent. Fax options are legion. Only drawback is no built-in networking support requires me to attach the printer directly via USB when I want to use the scanner or photo printing options. Not a big deal for me since we have two laptops in the house.

Review: Awesome all-in-one for home office
by: K. Goldsborough on date: April 11, 2007
Prints quickly and clearly. Copier has come in very handy. The machine has almost earned its worth just with its copying function; you can choose to photo-copy either black and white or with color. Easy to set up printing using the USB cable and included CD. We haven't tried the scan or fax options yet, but will soon. It's also sleek, very easy on the eyes. So far, it has been just the right machine for our home office. It operates relatively intuitively (without needing to look at the manual.) Very pleased with this product, so far.

Review: Good Overall....BUT
by: Lawrence W. Mayer on date: April 12, 2007
It does all jobs well but Scanning is not as good or versitle as a flatbed. The ink tank cost is more and life is not as good as my Canon PIXMA IP400. It makes me think they are using the razor/razor blade marketing gambit.

Review: Canon MP830 Review - Worst Printer Yet!
by: R. Piescik on date: April 11, 2007
I bought this all-in-one unit based upon all of the rave reviews online. What a mistake that was! I have had nothing but problems with it. I love the duplex feature it has been a great paper-saver, but that is about it for praise!
This unit is one of the worst offenders of consuming ink cartridges yet by Canon! In the two months that I have owned this unit I have consumed only two black ink cartridges and 10 each of all the colors. Here is the catch, I know many of you will think I'm crazy here, but 90% of my printing/copying is strictly black & white. Seldom do I want color! So, why did the canon design team create such a flawed unit. They have designed a unit that will consume your colors first then work on the black inks next. In my conversations with Canon I mentioned that I strictly choose the black feature for scans & copies, yet the machine automatically hits up the color inks first to make black. I do the same for my word & excel files as well.
I strongly recommend that anyone looking for an all-in-one unit think twice before choosing this unit. You will save yourself a hugh ink bill! Go towards a laser unit, they may cost a few bucks more up front, but in the long term they will be much cheaper on the consumable side!

Review: Pixma MP 830
by: T. Davidson on date: April 15, 2007
Very easy set up and installation even for the technology challenged, like myself. Prints great photo images. Faxing is easy. Although it says Vista Certified on the box, beware! Since installation of the Canon MP830, I have to wait to see what I'm typing. The words I type do not show as I type them, as in this review. If this had not happened, I would have rated the machine 5 stars. After you open the box and pull out the manuals you will find that 2 of the programs are not Vista compatible.

Review: Good machine
by: Kevin W. Wright on date: May 7, 2007
Overall, I bought it for the paper handling capability, which is a little better than the MP780. The only negative is that the ink cartridges are still very expensive and the generics are pretty much useless because of the chip transfer requirement, which is much to time consuming and clumsy for my taste. But then, that's why Canon did the chip thing on the cartridge in the first place, since there is no other reason other than to eliminate the competition for cartidges.

by: C. Shelley on date: May 4, 2007
After 3 years and wearing out an MP730 I thought I would stick woth the Cannon brand. I have had the Pixma 830 for about 8 months now and have spent enough on ink to put a kid through college! The unit is already starting to squeek & make noise too! Not the quality of past printers! The scan funtion is far too complex also.
If I had to do it again I would buy something else.

Review: WARNING: Nice printer but uses ink at an alarming and expensive rate!
by: Glenn Cherrits on date: April 21, 2007
Great machine but very expensive to be buying ink every week. Most irritating is that the machine won't receive faxes if even one of the color ink cartridges runs out. This can hurt your business. if you buy this then make sure to buy lots of replacement cartridges.

Review: Cordless Phone Users Beware this All in One
by: C. Herndon-King on date: May 8, 2007
I just purchased the MP830, replacing an old HP Officejet T45. I have one phone line in the house, and a cordless phone base station connected to the MP830 for use in my office. When the home phone rings with ANY VOICE CALL, you HAVE TO ANSWER IT ON THE PHONE CONNECTED TO THE MP830 or else the MP830 continues to ring and click over the phone line then picks up and starts a handshake over your conversation. You can only use one base station in the house, and it MUST be the one with the answering machine, and it must be connected to the MP830. Tech service says the only solution is to set the fax to Manual so it doesn't answer, or purchase the DRPD service from your phone company. My 7 year old HP answered automatically with no intervention, and picked up faxes automatically regardless of whether the answering machine had them or if someone physically answered.

Review: Disappointing Quality
by: Cheryl G. Price on date: May 9, 2007
Have owned several Canon multifunction printers over the years and I'm afraid the MP830 was a real disappointment.

First, quality control. In the last year, I am on my third unit. First one, the motherboard died and the unit was replaced under warranty. Second one, the paper feed jammed repeatedly. That unit was no longer under warranty and looks like I'll be on the hook for the cost of a new unit.

But, it won't be a Canon.

Other disappointment was the batch scanning function to a .pdf. With manual scanning, the images were clear and dark. However, in the batch scanning function, the images were very light, almost unreadable in some cases. Customer service admitted that this was a known problem with the software - but didn't know what Canon Japan would get around to fixing it.

Overall, buy something else.

Review: Awesome Printer! Problem with first shipment though.
by: PCamp on date: May 12, 2007
After reading a few discouraging reviews, I decided to go ahead anyway with my purchase of the Canon PIXMA MP830 Office All-In-One Printer. I have always used Canon printers and have been quite happy with them, as I have found Canon products to be well built and reliable. However, I was initially quite disappointed with this purchase. It turns out that the unit was defective. After hooking it up and going through the entire set up process, the print head cleaner started making really loud clicking/grinding sounds. Also, when I looked at the scanning bed, there were fingerprints galore on the glass, and even the illuminated screen had some scuff marks. So, this particular unit could either mean one of 3 things:

1. Canon slipped a refurb into the mix and I was lucky enough to receive it.
2. Amazon knowingly sold these as refurbs but did not advertise that they were (I noticed the price increased by $30 the next day after I received the printer. Maybe a refurb blowout at $239 on the down-low? Hmmm.)
3. Someone else bought this printer, it broke down, but then returned it to Amazon without telling them there was anything wrong with it (the printer had the factory orange tape on all the doors and flaps of the printer, so I doubt it was a return.)

I must say though, that Amazon's return policy is brilliant and painless. They make it real easy to make a return online by visiting your order history, and clicking the Return link for the purchased product. Within hours, I was told that UPS would be coming to pick up the printer, and they would ship a new one to me via Next Day at no charge. The only condition is that the returned product needs to be received by Amazon within 30 days, or else they will charge you again for the purchase. But UPS was here the next day to pick it up, so that wouldn't even be an issue anyway.

I received my new printer today, and I was not charged the difference, even though it is currently selling for $30 more than when I had purchased it. This one is clean, and is working great! No problems so far.

To sum up, I feel the Canon PIXMA MP830 Office All-In-One Printer has awesome features, especially for the price. I don't find this printer to be noisy at all, as some of the other reviewers have mentioned. It's what you would expect from any printer. It does print very fast and acceptionally well. Despite the fact that I received a bum printer the first time around, I am overall satisfied with my purchase. I rate this printer with 5 stars just because I think it is one of the best you can buy, with it's many features, and at such a great price.

Review: Mixed feelings so far.
by: Paul J. Blank on date: May 12, 2007
Just after setting up the unit (initial test was ok), the printer reported that the black cartridge was bad (not empty) - and in fact the cartridge was almost full. Replaced with new cartridge, and the unit would, for awhile, make good color copies but not good black copies. Now it's ok. I am taking a wait-and-see attitude. There do not appear to be any all-in-one inkjet devices from any manufacturer that are truly reliable. I thought, from what I'd read, that this might be the best of them. We shall see.

I wanted a multi-function printer / scanner / copier that specifically had an auto-feeder tray.

Everything I've needed to do -- scanning multiple double-sided documents (such as finance papers), printing photos and documents quickly, color copying, etc. -- has come out wonderfully.

This is just an example of a machine that does everything well -- it shows the maturity of the whole "multi-function" field.

This printer does it all. It was a breeze to set up and it works as advertised. I have not tried the photo printing feature yet but have used the scanner, copier, printer and fax and they all work great. I highly recommend this as an all-in-one solution.

Review: I couldn't be happier
by: M. Sheard on date: May 18, 2007
I could not be happier with my PIXMA MP830 all in one printer. It prints great and faxing is so easy. If I had to name one thing that I was not totally happy with, it would be that sometimes the paper gets stuck in the printer when I am using the automatic document feeder. I use 24lb paper so this does not happen very often. Otherwise, I LOVE IT!!

I love this printer. I haven't used every feature yet, but I like the ones I have used a lot. It prints fast and the instructions are easy to follow. I would recommend this printer for anyone who goes to school, prints their own pictures, and/or has their own office.

Review: Not dependable
by: C. Dove on date: May 19, 2007
The design flaw with this device is that everything depends on a wholly undependable ink system. I'm on my third replacement. I bought one; it didn't work out the box; returned and replaced (of course with a refurbished rather than new); returned and replaced again.

Each time there has been something wrong with the ink carriage or the cartridges.

For those with the same problem, you too have seen those maddening blinking ink cartridges. Cartridges are full, but for whatever reason the printer can't read them. And this problem shuts the whole printer down. You can't even scan documents to your desktop. Sometimes if I turn the printer on and off 3 or 4 times, or leave it on overnight and then re-set, then it will work. Most of the time it won't, and in any case I need my printer to work more often than not (rather than the other way around).

Since my printer does occasionally work, I understand why those who luckily have a nondefective carriage are happy with it. It scans and prints just fine. But even so -- it chugs ink like a man who just emerged from the Sahara. Even with occassional use I'm buying expensive cartridges all the time. The ink-jet system is a poor choice -- too fragile and the expense of continually buying new cartridges quickly overtakes any upfront savings versus a laser.

Canon have given up on its product; since mine works at least sometimes they won't do anything further. Well, I've given up on Canon, and the ink-jet system. I'm scrapping my losses and buying a different brand and a laser.

Review: Spend a fortune on canon Ink
by: Susan Fitzell on date: May 28, 2007
Canon has created a product that STOPS FUNCTIONING if you don't purchase their ink. I quickly learned that it sucks up more ink than my old HP ever did. I'm spending at least 10 cents a page if I print using the standard setting.

So, given the cost, I created a customized setting that would use minimal ink. Gone are the days of having nice printouts for everything. Then, I bought refilled ink and turned off the ink monitoring system. Well, Canon has put spy chips on their ink cartridges so that the printer knows when you use refillable ink. I have full ink cartridges and it will stop working saying ink can't be read. Then it gives me an error message stating that it is not liable for printer malfunction if the customer is using refillable ink. If I had knows how much it would cost me to use this printer I would never have purchased it.

So, if you have an unlimited budget and don't care how much you have to pay for ink, it's a great machine. However, if you care about how much it costs to run your printer, AVOID this machine.

Imagine if you bought a car that only allowed you to service that car at the dealership and if you went to another service station, the car would no longer run! That is what this is like. It infuriates me that Canon gets away with this. Personally, I think it's unethical.

Review: Problems and more problems

I am so disappointed with this product. It has so many great features and I was very excited to purchase it. I have spent hours trying to get it to print in color (even purchased new cartridges and performed all maintenance items) and it still does not print in color. The scanning process is quirky and repeats the scan so that I end up with multiple scans of the same item. The Canon web site is not helpful. I could not even locate this item on the web site. I am so frustrated that I will never buy Canon again. I had HP for many years and different models and never had a problem. I switched to Canon because of what seemed to be better features. What a waste of money.

I just set up my new MP830 and when I got to the point of setting up the fax I was angred and disappointed. I am used to receiving all my faxes directly to the computer.
This machine does not support receiving faxes to the computer so it's fax function is of little use to me.
Every received fax must be printed then scanned into the computer - what a waste of ink & time. My last multifunction would automatically store both received and sent faxes. If I didn't want them they would disappear at the click of my mouse.
A whopping big No Thanks from me.

I've been looking for an All-in-One solution for quite some time and this one has lived up to it's reputation. Consumer Reports rated this Canon MP830 #1 and I must say, they were right on target. The print quality is excellent, but it's scanning, copying and faxing capabilities are even more impressive. I especially like the auto duplex coping and printing features. Buy this All-in-One printer, you will not be disappointed.

I bought this to update an old HP. I was very impressed by the reviews. After unpacking it and loading up the software I went to print. It kept insisting that there was no paper in the machine. I removed the paper tray and turned the machine over to see if something was taped up; the hinges for the top of the unit became unhinged. I packed it up and sent it back.

Review: Good Printer
by: S. Katz on date: June 3, 2007
I would definitely recommend this printer. It prints photos very quickly as oppose to other printers I have used and the quality is great. The copy function has really come in handy. I used the duplex and it works fairly well but depends on paper quality. I wouldn't recommend using it for large number of copies. A few items to consider though: The printer is large and takes up more space than most. If you are used to refilling you cartridges to save money it may not be possible with this printer. Ink cartridges are reasonable in cost but depending on the type of printing you do, you may find that you are constanting replacing the cartridges. The function keys are great but you will need the user manual to understand everything an how to use the settings. All in all a very good printer.

Review: Great printer / copier / fax multifunction
by: Florencio B. De Merced, Jr. on date: June 18, 2007
It's been 6 mos now, only in my 2nd batch of inks (only the 8-cli blk that's still un changed), and it's been problem free. It does initially look as an ink guzzler, but only if you turn it on and off just to print a few pages... that's what my old Deskject 970cxi is for... but like last week, I had to print 43 4R pics in a row, the printer just chugged it all in... and only the Magenta ink went down one bar, everyone else stayed at the same level.

I love the ADF on top....Fax works, Copier works. Even CD printing works... (mine's got it)

Most of my errors are human in nature... like CD printing...on a white CDR, but not really printable...he he... out of paper, when I didn't change the source tray from rear to bottom feed. Printing using the Glossy ICC when using Matte Canon Paper... etc...

What would make this thing more appealing is if canon put

- Networking built-in / Wifi enabled
- Turning-on on demand.
- make the paper feed at the back as reliable as the one at the bottom. The jolt upon paper feed sometimes skews it a bit.
- 4:3 photo printing would be nice... though not a necessity.
- improve the warm up time I guess... something a bit faster he he

Review: Best All In One for me, so far!
by: Jaco Vlok on date: June 19, 2007
Awesome product! I had 2 HP 6210 All in one printers prior to the Canon. Both broke down right after the warranty was up.... HP didn't want to repair, and try to sell me on a new printer. The first time, I fell for it and got yet another HP. When it happened the second time, I told them they know what they can do with that printer.
Anyway, the only thing I do not like about the Canon, is that every time you print you have to manually change the print settings to "Fast Draft" and "Grayscale" this save a lot of ink. I had the printer now for 3 months, and I print a lot of stuff, I have yet to change the ink cartridges.
The software load very easy, i did not have any problems with it at all.

Review: Horrible design for black text printing with duplexing
by: A. J. Miller on date: June 26, 2007
This printer is getting rave reviews from both PC Magazine and PC World. That said, there's a big problem with this printer that neither review mentions: namely, duplex black text printing from ALL applications produces inferior results than when duplexing is off--and uses colour ink to produce black text when printing in duplex mode. Consequently, until this issue is addressed, the MP830 is difficult for me to recommend.

Why? According to Canon technical support, the design flaw is by choice. But more on that later.

If I don't duplex print on fast mode, the text looks very good (the problem is duplex text printing). The print quality when duplex text printing looks dotty and washed out. If you turn duplexing off, the text print quality is vastly superior. The difference on fast mode when not duplex printing is quite astounding. Simply using duplex printing makes the text quality significantly worse on fast mode.

One might be inclined to believe bad quality from fast mode text printing isn't a big deal (except that the MP830 is quite capable of producing very good text quality even at fast mode--except when duplexing), but this problem also extends to standard printing when duplexing is enabled. That said, in standard mode the problem isn't as pronounced.

Basically the MP830 is using the colour inks to produce black text instead of the pigment black ink when printing text in duplex mode. I find this to be extremely bothersome. The problem exists when duplexing text in other printing quality modes, but it's most apparent or obvious when duplexing text on fast mode.

You won't find this issue listed in professional reviews from PCMagazine or PC World, simply because the reviewers probably didn't bother to check. For whatever reason, missing this issue is pretty sloppy.

If you want good text quality when duplex printing, it's best not to use this printer at all: you're using color ink instead of the black pigment ink--and the text looks vastly inferior as a result.

This is from Canon technical support:

"The unit was designed to print using "composite black" when duplexing. Composite black is created by using color inks. Unfortunately, we do not have answers as to why Canon USA made this decisions, these decisions are determined by the developers at Canon INC."

Absolutely brutal. Composite black text print is vastly inferior to the text print produced when using the black ink cartridge. Canon technical support is basically telling me that duplex black text printing on the MP830 is horrible by design. Oh, plus you have the added bonus of wasting color ink when printing inferior black text while duplexing.

Inexcusable

Upon inquiring further, this is the reason Canon technical support gives for using color ink to produce black text while duplex printing:

"Composite black is least likely to show through the other side of the document, which may occur when using black ink and printing on both sides of the paper. "

Then why can I print text on one side, flip the page over manually, print text on the other side, and not experience any issue with ink showing through to the other side? The text quality looks vastly superior when I do this instead of duplexing (I do not experience any issues).

It shouldn't be that difficult to allow a printer driver option to use the pigmented black ink with a longer drying time (because I've also been told by Canon pigmented black ink may smear when duplex priting) if that's what the customer would prefer, instead of inflicting poor text quality produced by color inks when duplex black text printing.

This issue is very easily reproduced:

Print text in fast mode with duplexing on. Then print text in fast mode with duplexing off.

Night and day

It's not just fast mode that's affected either; it's all print quality modes when duplex printing is enabled. More importantly, all customers have the added bonus (in addition to poor black text quality while duplexing) of wasting color ink when printing black text with the duplex printing option enabled.

Canon's response to this is that pigmented black ink will smear, bleed, or show through to the other side when duplex printing. Contrary to Canon's claim, I am not experiencing any issues when printing black text in standard mode on one side of cheap Britex Premier Multiusage paper (20 lb 92 bright . . . I paid less than a dollar for 500 sheets on sale), flipping the page over manually, and printing the other side again on standard. Regardless of whether I've tested using tons of different papers (and I admit I haven't), again, it shouldn't be that difficult to allow a printer driver option to use the pigmented black ink with a longer drying time if that's what the customer would prefer, instead of inflicting poor text quality produced by composite black (created by using color inks) when duplexing black text.

This unit was purchased as a second printer, to be used only for color prints, scanning and copying. We have no land line for faxing.

The color prints are beautiful and when using photo quality paper you'd swear they were actual photos and not generated on a printer.

The feature I've come to enjoy and use more often is the "duplexing" mode where I can copy in documents (or drawings) and print them on both sides of the paper. This is a wonderful feature, although not the fastest, but I'm not *THAT* pressed for time where a few extra minutes will break me.

Having just started my own business, I was looking for an affordable machine that could do it all - print, scan, copy and fax. The MP830 works perfectly on all counts. It's quiet and fast, with great quality printing. The fact that I can print my digital photos on the MP830 renders my little HP Photosmart printer kind of useless now.

I purchased this machine for my small business office. It replaced a 4 year old HP all in one. This machine is by far superior and cost (in todays dollar) half what I paid for the HP. Set up was very straight forward. All functions have worked as expected. It produces very crisp print with little noise and very quickly. I have used the machine now for about a month with no difficulties.

This is one slick machine. The ability to do two-sided scans and copies with automatic feed is the best I have seen. For the most part all actions are intuitive. The flexibilty of each application gives the user a range of options that are simple and straightforward. The quality of copying and printing is outstanding. If there is any shortcoming it might be in the scanning software. I had a some difficulty getting scans formated properly but that might have been more my problem than the machine. I also had a problem getting my computer to recognize the printer but that was cleared up with a quick email to tech support. Overall I am very satisfied with the MP830 and would recommend it to anyone looking for a compact, quality machine.

Review: Ink replacement warnings are a nuisance.
by: B. Carter on date: February 14, 2007
I read MANY reviews before buying this product. None of them mentioned a huge nuisance. As anyone knows who has had an inkjet, replacing ink is a constant. You learn how many copies you can get after it tells you its getting low. This machine shows the low ink warning EVERY SINGLE TIME you go to print something. To make a copy you even have to press "ok" before it will print!! You cannot shut this off. The only solution is to replace the cartridge knowing that you could get many more copies before it's truly out of ink. Adding to the problem, this machine has 5 ink tanks. One is them is always low. Even if you do black, gray printing most of the time, it uses the colors and they run out quickly. Think twice before buying this machine. Its good performance is completely overshadowed by this problem.

I bought this printer on a recommendation from Consumer Reports, and I have loved it from the start. It is very easy to use and prints excellent quality photos that look like they were printed at a lab. The only possible drawback for me is its size. It is a bit larger than your average all-in-one. I would recommend this printer, and I would recommend buying it here at Amazon. With the free shipping, you can't beat the price!

Review: Running the Canon Pixma MP830 through it's Paces
by: J. Novak on date: February 11, 2007
Why did I buy it? Good question... I wanted to combine my scanner and printer in an all-in-one to have the convenience of a copy machine and printer in one unit (i.e. quick copies without the PC). I was also hoping to pick up an automatic document feeder (ADF) that would auto feed old 35mm color photo prints (typically 4"x6") and scan them in to the computer in bulk. And of course I wanted the all-in-one to perform all design functions well and with quality.

How long have I owned the MP830? Three weeks. Other printers/scanners owned? Two HP's (895cxi workhorse), HP Photosmart 7550. Two other Canon Printers (S600 and Pixma IP6600D). Scanner Visioneer One Touch 8100.

What I've tried and what I think:

Copy Feature: I've copied using the ADF and directly on the glass. I think the MP830 does a very good job at copies. Comparing a copy of a photo on the MP830 to my Visioneer the Canon was more much faithful in capturing the original colors and the resolution was hands down better on the Canon. Copying standard letter size documents is a breeze using the ADF and the copies come out very nice.

Scanning: On one occasion I copied 15 pages out of an manual using the ADF and the Omnipage SE software that came with the MP830. I converted the scans to editable text and found this to be very accurate saving me a lot of typing time. On another occasion I copied pages out of a workbook with questions to study for a test and again used Omnipage to convert to editable text which I pasted in to Word for Windows. I then put index cards in the MP830 auto sheet feeder (rear feed) and ripped off 60 index cards very quickly (using fast mode on the MP830). They came out great and were a great study aid. I did try scanning some 35 mm color prints using the ADF and though it fed the prints through ok, they came out slightly skewed. So I ended up putting three directly on the platen glass and used the "Auto Detect" multiple document feature of the Canon MP Navigator software that came with the MP830. This software allowed me to save separate JPG's of each picture automatically corrected for any slight skewing of each picture laid on the glass. Though I would have preferred the ADF process for handling my old photos, this feature is a nice touch for scanning multiple prints. By the way I tried running a 4x6 print through the ADF on an HP Photosmart C6180 in a store and the C6180 ADF jammed with the 4x6. I did a lot of searching on the Internet for an ADF scanner that would handle batch scanning of old prints and really could not find anything so I don't know if any of these machines can accomplish such a task.

Fax: Didn't really have much need for a fax machine but after reading the manual and setting up the fax feature I was able to successfully send and receive a fax just fine. I did not try any of the auto answer modes as faxing in my house is a rare occasion and I'd rather answer a fax call manually which is a simple press of one of two start buttons on the MP830, works for my needs.

Memory Card Reader: I tested the MP830 with a Smart Media card out of one of my digital camera's and found the MP830 to be very quick and responsive at reading the pictures on the card. My previous HP Photosmart 7550 card readers were horribly slow, so much so that I'd never use it for that reason but the Canon works well. However, my newer camera's use XD memory cards and the Canon doesn't accept those without purchasing an adapter to use in the Compaq Flash slot on the MP830. I had the same issue with my Canon IP6600D. Personally I don't think it would break Canon's bank to add the additional slots natively. Not a big issue for me because I use my computer memory card slots most of the time anyway, but it is an opportunity to make a very nice product that much nicer. My newer camera's do work fine on the PictBridge port on the MP830, but I rarely have a desire to print right from my camera before using the excellent features of Photoshop to touch them up first.

Paper Handling: Here's where I think this machine really shines. Canon's paper handling is wonderful! You have two separate feed sources. Cassette feeding from the front and drop in feeding from the back. I had a chance to test out an HP all-in-one C5180 that my mom-in-law bought and was disappointed in HP's idea of paper feeding. With HP you have one way to feed, from the front. This requires all papers to go in to the HP printer and wrap around the platen before being printed and ejected. If you try to run invitation size envelopes (4-3/8" x 5-3/4") through the HP they'll work after you find the right magic spot to put them, but sounds like it's going to eat them in the process. With the Canon MP830 you have the option of dropping specialty paper such as envelopes and photo paper in the rear auto sheet feeder and the printer runs the paper through without wrapping them around the platen. Plus you can keep regular letter paper in the front cassette and switch back and forth with one button. Very nice feature! Though neither HP nor Canon mention feeding invitation size envelopes through their printers I find the Canon MP830 handles them very well through the rear auto sheet feed. And the index cards I mentioned above are another example of the great paper handling of this unit. Plus getting an automatic duplexer in a printer of this class is awesome!

Printing: After owning two HP's with multi-color cartridges I just had to move back to a single color cartridge system. Every time I replaced an HP multi-color cartridge because one color was out I was sure I was throwing away ink! That being said, both of my HP's still perform like they did on day one in quality because their cartridges contained the print head so you always got a new print head (and most likely paid for in with the cost of the ink). With my Canon IP6600D I have six individual color ink cartridges to replace, however I only have to replace the color that's actually out at any given time. However it does seem that some of the colors always run out together and others (yellow and black) run a different replacement cycle (more often) for the kind of printing my family does. With the MP830 there are only three dye ink color cartridges plus a black dye ink for color/photo printing. It also has a black pigment ink cartridge for non-color printing. Unfortunately I'm not sure you ever know which black cartridge it's using when it's printing, but my experience so far has been the pigment ink cartridge gets used the most for standard everyday document printing (web pages, emails, word documents, spreadsheets, etc.). For photos I believe it's the dye ink black that's used. After three weeks I have used up about three fourths of the pigment ink. The dye black doesn't look like much has been used at all. The three colors are down about one half to three fifths of their capacity. I have printed probably twenty 4"x6" color photos, and my daughter printed 35 picture contact sheets which she ran through the ADF to copy (she was happy to see this machine run through those and they were sticker sheets to boot!). Honestly my wife and I think the photo quality of the MP830 is so close to the IP6600D (which has the photo colors) that it would be hard for us to tell the difference. The prints are wonderful. The ink use seems high, but I've always thought all my inkjets use too much ink (HP & Cannon). Of course we all know this is where the manufactures are making their money, ink. As stated by others if you use auto duplexing in the "fast" print mode on the MP830 the printer does a sub standard job and seems to use the color inks for black verses the pigment ink. However in normal duplex printing it does a fine job. In all modes of simplex printing (fast included) it does a fine job. Auto duplexing on the MP830 is not a fast process, but I use a much more expensive Tektronix color laser at work and it's duplexing mode doesn't break any sound barriers either. I'm sure the cost of the Tektronix far exceeds that of this MP830. The great part about auto duplexing is there's no wasted paper trying figure out which side of the paper should be up or down like you would when manual duplexing. The MP830 does it for you automatically.

LCD Display: Nothing to brag about here, it serves its purpose but the wheel feature on the MP600 I checked out would have been a handier way to get around the machine in my opinion. But then I own an IPOD...;-}

Networking: This is an area I would have liked to see Canon offer options. For me I would have rather had wired or wireless networking built in to the MP830 verses the fax feature? I have the machine connected to a PC running Windows XP Media addition (USB cable attached) and it's shared on my home network with other PC's using Windows networking so any PC can use the MP830 for printing. However none of the other MP830 features are available to the other PC's; only the one it's directly attached too. Not a real big deal for me but again I would have gladly traded the fax for the built in networking.

Finally for some reason Canon left out the IR port on the MP830 that they included on my Pixma IP6600D printer. With all the other features the MP830 offers this is really not a big deal, but kind of curious why they left that one out.

In summary I am very happy so far with all the useful features and quality of this all-in-one. Unfortunately I don't have the run time yet to know longevity and hope I don't experience some of the infant mortality issues a few have, but time will be the author of that chapter of this story. I hope this helps someone else out. I have read many reviews by others which helped me in my decision to purchase this product. I appreciate the professional reviews, but also highly value reviews by people like us who get them home and really use them for everyday tasks. I was really torn between the Canon MP830 and the Canon MP600 which has received many positive reviews and none negative that I've found. However I did have a brief experience with an MP600 and the scanner seemed slow to me and not as accurate in reproduction as the MP830. Since the MP600 uses a CIS scanner element verses the traditional CCD sensor the MP830 has I'm still a little skeptical of the MP600 scanning feature. Only because I don't have any experience with CIS technology (and tend to believe they have opportunity to improve, but that's just my opinion). By the way I still think HP makes a fine printer as all my HPs are still in service and working like the day I bought them, but I think HP could learn from Canon on paper handling.

Review: Question on country of Origin
by: Bleades on date: February 11, 2007
I have had this printer for several months now and have been for the most part very satisfied. I tried to scan a legal document via the ADF and it only scanned what amounted to letter size. Likewise, I have had a problem copying legal size document as when it copies only get what amounts to about a post card size portion of the copy. Operator problem??

Have not used it for faxing as have a dedicated fax machine in other room. The 2 sided printing is real nice as well as 2 sided copies.

I am wondering if anyone knows where this is made? I am just curious.

by: M. Boulden on date: February 8, 2007
I had no problem setting up the PIXMA MP830; chose it because it was highest rated in recent not-to-be-named consumer publication PLUS I was enthusiastic about the Canon brand--I had a Canon copy machine that worked well for an unbelievably long time (13+ years)! The new all-in-one takes a bit longer than my old Canon to warm up and produce the first copy--but the PIXMA MP830 cost just a little more than a new toner cartridge alone would have cost for the old PC-6RE, and it does so much more. Color printing works nicely, although I had a problem using my Picasa2 print feature with it (layout came out wrong). However, the included SW (Easy Photo-Print) produced good results. I was disappointed that I cannot directly insert my Fuji XD memory card into the card slot--need to buy an adaptor somewhere; wish Canon would have mentioned that or included an adaptor (no big deal anyway, my SanDisk card reader connects directly to my PC, so I'll continue to use that)

I pluged the unit it and it works GREAT. I can't say enough good about it. It does so many different functions and does them well. It does seem to use a lot of ink, but the quality of the print and photo's is very good. Very simple to operate.

Review: Best in Class
by: TimInChicago on date: January 31, 2007
This has to be the best printer in its capability and price class - in fact, I would say it's the best value of any multifunction. We got this printer for a full-time home office and have been very pleased with it. The doc feeder works well, the software actually works - both on Windows XP and (with a download from Canon), on the new Windows Vista.

I was so tired of HP printers, not really because of the hardware, but because the software was so bad and so 'fat'. The Canon software is much more effecient and doesn't try to take over your entire PC. It just works.

All said, this is a lot of really nice technology and great functionality beautifully pulled together in an elegant form factor for a great price.

Review: meets all expectations
by: Herbert Abelow on date: January 27, 2007
The MP830 proved to install with the MAC effortlessly and quickly. However new machine arrived with a faulty duplexing transport unit. Tec support was very accessable ( almost no wait time) and immediatly set up an exchange with, not a new, but a refurbished unit. It would seem that a brand new printer which was delivered with a major component malfunctioning, (immediatly out of the box) should have been replaced with a new not a refurbished machine. In any event the exchange was prompt. Another problem was a faulty ink tank, one of five. Canon tec support immediatly recognized the problem and sent a complete set of ink tanks without charge.
Other than these two problems, which appear to be manufactoring control issues, the product performs to my highest expectations, deliverd at a reasonable price, and is deffinatly a user friendly device.

Review: Where's my 50 dollar rebate people???
by: A. Luikart on date: January 26, 2007
I am a little disgruntled folks! Although the printer works fine, I can't say the same thing of the people who sold it to me. I have sent 2 emails previously about this little oversight for which I have still received no response. This printer advertised with a fifty dollar rebate certificate with no strings attached.(unlike the other one they offer if you buy a camera as well) I am very cautious about reading the fine print in everything that I ever do and I chose this one because it was the only one available with the fifty dollar rebate with no strings. I never received my rebate and neither the seller nor Amazon has done anything to resolve this issue. I would like my fifty dollars please or I will be forced to take my wifes and my business somewhere else.

Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter!

I really like this printer, it copies, scans and prints really fast, the only thing I haven't figured out how to do and I guess I haven't taken the time is how to make 4X6 prints, I don't use the fax, so can't comment about that and one other thing is that I knew it didn't come with the usb cable, but it seems to me that this item that doesn't cost that much should be included, I ended up buying the wrong kind so I had to buy two items, well maybe next time I'll study the item more carefully. Other than that I don't have any complains.

This printer has it all. Don't listen to lazy people complain about this machine wasting ink. If you just read the manual you would discover that all you have to do is adjust the ink output settings in the printing preferences menu!!! If you do not like the preset choices, you can choose your own ink density. Wonderful product!!

"Up-Graded" from a Dell 960 and am pleasently surprised. All-in-on was an easy set up and the print quality is very good. Easy to use and good looking. It is smooth, quiet and as fast as advertised. Haven't had it long enough to comment on use of ink but, otherwise, impressed with it.

Review: Great so far ...
by: Mandy Kotzman on date: January 19, 2007
I have only just set up this machine, so I have only used the most straightforward facilities of a machine that offers a great number. The fax sent and delivered flawless first time. Its a bit hungry for ink (as noted by other owners), but the copies and printing of text and pictures have been very good. Duplex printing is a bit slow as it has to dry the first side before doing the second and completes each page separately, but I really like having the facility. Plain B&W is very quick. The auto feed is wonderful for both scanning and copying, and has worked flawless so far. Scanning is fine, even on the 300 dpi setting. The only quirk I've noticed is that I need to turn the printer off to boot the computer or it gives me a blank screen with a flashing cursor - I haven't found and explanation or tried to fix it.

Review: solid performer
by: Paul Rampel on date: January 18, 2007
The Canon multifunction printer has been easy to set up and use. This purchase replaced a Canon Multipass 730 - I especially appreciated the duplex printer/copier function and the second paper feed! The only negative I would report is the lack of an adequate driver for Mac OS network connected computer - This lack kept me from sharing the printer from my Windows Server with the Macs in my network.

Review: Not so all in one printer
by: M. Federico on date: January 18, 2007
Ordered the Canon printer as a christmas gift for my girlfrined. When I received the printer, it was still in the original manufactures box that you would get from a office depot if you had bought it from the store. The box's outside was beat up, and generally trashed. Also it had rained that day, so when I got home from work I found the box at my front door and it was also wet. When Christmas came we tried it out, the fax machine part of the all in one printer did not work. After several attempts with the Canon service reps, we are supposedly getting a new printer in the mail. Hopefully it will not be received in a wet damaged box,and broken. Who's at fault for the broken printer? Is it Amazon, Canon, or UPS who delievered the printer???? You decide!

Review: Look out HP, I just hopped the fence...
by: Derrik Ammons on date: January 13, 2007
I've been a loyal HP Printer customer for over 15 years. It was a tough choice between this one and HP's 7310. Many of my co-workers talked highly of the PIXMAs, and the price was right at $234. No tax and free shipping... can't beat it. The color copies are great. Real easy to install the software and even easier to set it up. The hardest thing... getting those orange plastic pieces off the ink cartridges without touching various parts. If you have fat fingers, forget about it. Give them to your 3 year old.

A few downers... 1) the casing seems a little feeble. But maybe all Home/Office All-in-One's feel sort of cheap. 2) No ethernet port. I'll have to find another way to network this printer. 3) Can't copy legal docs. Probably don't need this, anyways. You can use the high end printer at your work.

Goods:
Lightning fast. Beautiful output. Relatively inexpensive cost per page. All the bells and whistles and its easy to use too. I haven't used the feature yet, but it looks like it will scan slides and negatives. (Although you can't put them into the document feeder which works well for all other original types/sizes.)
Others:
Flatbed scanner only accepts letter size originals. (You're out of luck if you want to scan or fax a legal-sized original.)
Conclusion:
Look at what all the professional reviewers have to say. They all love it. The folks at Consumer Reports just rated it #1 for inkjet multifunctionals.

Review: It Failed After 6 months and Canon's Service has been Terrible
by: Dan Simoneau on date: January 6, 2007
I bought the Canon Pixma MP830 when my previous Canon printer suddenly died. I've used it in my home office. For six months it was great. Then suddenly I got an error message and it stopped working entirely.

I've been loyal to Canon for 25 years as I've owned 6 of their cameras and 3 of their printers.

It has been three weeks since I contacted Canon on this issue and I'm still without a unit which means I'm operating without a printer, fax, copier, and scanner. I used all four units every single day.

First, Canon told me to bring the unit to a service center over 100 miles away. Then after an exchange of email and a call or two, they agreed to ship me a new unit on December 20th after I provided them with the serial number. We agreed that I would use the package to return the faulty unit. I was told I would get the unit in five business days. That wasn't to bad as it was the holiday so they weren't the busiest days for me.

Now, It's January 5th and I'm still without the unit. I'm a small one man business and I need the equipment I have. I bought Canon because they have always had great products and good service. I'm upset that when I really needed them on this, both their product and their service failed me.

When I contacted them today, I found out the unit hasn't been shipped and I'll be without the unit until I fax the a proof of puchase that they hadn't asked for before. So today I missed some work as I drove elsewhere to fax them the proof they need. I found the request that i fax it really annoying as my fax is their dead unit....

Review: Canon PIXMA MP830 Office All-In-One Printer is a great product
by: T. M. Szeto on date: January 5, 2007
I like the printer very much. The two paper feeders are nice, and the ability to print a digital photo directly from a digital camera, at least from a Canon digital camera, is pretty convenient. Another nice feature is that it enables one to copy a stack of paper automatically.

The drawback is the inks are very expensive and there are no cheaper compatibles available because an ink tank has a chip with a code and it is hard to decode by compatible ink manufacturers.

Review: So far so good...
by: missyO on date: January 5, 2007
My husband and I bought this printer about 2 months ago and so far it's been great! The only thing we haven't used on it yet is the fax. So far the photocopy aspect of it is our favorite, it's great just to put the pile of paper in the feed and have it go through no problem.

The only down side was when we tried to print photos, they came out with smudges of black ink on them. Other than that every printout, both black and white as well as colour, looks great!

It also takes it a little while to warm up when you first turn it on, but for me it's really not a huge deal...you just have to give it time to do it's thing (less than 1 minute) and then you're off!

Review: Excellent
by: OC Rice on date: January 5, 2007
At the time I purchased this printer, it was the only one that met my criteria at a sub $400 price- scanner, fax, copier, printer and most importantly, two paper trays.

I could not be happier with my purchase. I ended up buying a second machine for my office.

Print quality is excellent. I have printed only a couple of photos, and have been very happy with them- it is not a major requirement of mine for this device. I have had no problems with paper feed. Having different paper/envelopes in the dual trays has been invaluable for me. It does seem to go through ink somewhat faster than my old Canon i950, but I have not done any objective tests to track this. I have not had need for the double sided printing, so cannot comment on the problems that others have noted.

It has been an absolute pleasure to use, and I would recommend it without a moment's hesitation.

Review: Excellent Printer
by: L. Moore on date: January 3, 2007
I've owned laser printers, ink jets, and bubble jets; Panasonic, Lexmark, Okidata, HP, and Canon-- most on the high end. The PIXMA MP830 is definately one of the best so far, and it's significantly less than I've paid for other printers in the past.

The MP830 so far has avoided the "big two" problems I've had with printers over the years: paper jams, and broken print mechanisms. I haven't had a single problem with either in the 3 months that I've owned the printer, and as a bonus the ink cartridge has held up quite well. I print 2-3 large color presentations every week and it has only now complained that magenta is running low. There have been no replacement print heads (not sure they can be replaced separately in this machine, BTW), and not a single clog. The MP830 does real double sided printing (no manual paper flipping) and it has two paper trays. I am under the impression that it can do double sided scans / copies too, although I've never actually tried it. The single-sided scans I've done, though, were very fast-- this is the fastest scanner I've ever owned. It also prints quite quickly, too-- much faster and quiter than the HP's I've owned. For Mac users, the drivers work great, but I had to download universal binaries from Canon (if you have an Intel-based Mac). The print quality is good for business documens, etc. For photos it is still decent but this is so subjective that you should probably go to CompUSA and print a sample sheet to decide for yourself. (As mentioned previously, I keep a Canon i9900 specifically for photos, but I'm definately fussier than most. If you decide to print photos on a Canon, be *sure* to use Canon photo paper because their inks are a little different and will run on some other brands of paper.) Lastly on the plus side, the form factor seems fairly compact for a multipurpose machine with all the features it has.

The foremost issue for me is that there is no network option, so the only way to share the printer is to power up the computer it is connected to and create a print share. (The remote machines [Macs in my case] are also unable to take advantage of all the printer features, but that could be a configuration error on my part.) This is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Also, the lower paper tray doesn't hold much paper and it is just terrible to get in and out (very tight). Although the panel has a nifty color display, I find the controls overall to be a little clumsy compared to HPs. I actually had to crack open the manual to find some settings, which shouldn't be necessary with a display in front of me. My last nit is that the drivers downloaded from Canon were a little ambiguous-- there were numerous files and it wasn't clear which ones I should use.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the printer and I recommend it to my friends without hesitation.

Review: Excellent, so glad I got this.
by: Brian E. on date: January 2, 2007
Like some "purists", I had stayed away from all-in-one devices figuring that by trying to do everything they probably didn't do anything really well. But lately it seems that has changed. While I'm sure you can get better printers, scanners, etc., devices like this PIXMA MP830 do so well at all their functions they should serve the majority of people's needs. I especially got this model for its ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) since it can scan, copy, and fax 2-sided documents. While its duplexer does make for a tricky paper path (I've had a few jams) it's a great way to deal with all the documents that are two sided.

I do think it goes through ink rather fast (as some others have noted). I don't print that much and have already had to buy new tanks for all but the "photo black" ink. So if you print a lot, especially photos, I'd imagine you'll go through ink pretty quickly.

But all in all I think it's great it certainly saves space having one device instead of 3 or 4.

Review: Versatile, but Prohibitively Ink-Hungry and Mediocre Photo Printing
by: T. Gandy on date: December 24, 2006
This printer can do anything, but be ready for enormous expenditures on ink. My printer's heads need deep-cleaning every time I try to print anything in color. Canon tech support has been good, but they seemed to think this was normal. I have printed three or four bad photos to every good one I have managed to print. All the blacks come out green until I clean the heads, wasting a great deal of ink.

The OCR feature is superb, and the printer scans well. The fax also works fairly well, but the manual is really garbled in the fax section--and throughout, for that matter.

My old Canon i960 printed better photographs, cheaper and easier. I miss it.

Review: Best All-In-One I've Seen
by: Jeff Mackay on date: December 20, 2006
I'll echo most of the other reviews: this is a fantastic printer! Photos are as sharp as I've seen, great color. Text is clear. Scanning is good (although not perfect). Copying is fast. It took less than 30 minutes to set it up and test each function.

The only downside is that it has no network support. I spent hours and hours looking at pro's and con's of all the all-in-ones out there.
HP sells several all-in-ones with both fax and network support. But to get everything I wanted, I'd have to buy an HP 7410, which is pretty pricey, and a bit outdated in terms of color cartridges. Canon doesn't sell a single model that offers both fax and networking. But I wanted the print quality of a Canon.

So I found a way to get the best of both worlds. To address the need for networking, I bought a D-Link DPR1260 wireless print server. The printer works with this print server, although not 100%. You can print just fine, but I haven't found a way yet to get print status or scan from the PC while the printer is attached to the print server. But that can be solved by installing first on your local system, then on the print server. If you need to scan or want to see status, simply disconnect the printer from the print server and connect to the PC.

This sounds like an awful lot to go through just to get network support for an all-in-one. But primarily I wanted excellent photo output. Copy, scan, and fax were all secondary. I print often, copy pretty frequently, rarely scan anything, and fax a couple times a month at most. So for me, the combination of the MP830 and the D-Link 1260 print server were as close to ideal as I could get.

Review: Great quality; great versatility; great Mac compatibility
by: J. Newton on date: December 20, 2006
I love, love, love this printer. I have had a spate of bad luck in printer choices over the years. So, I decided to refer to Consumer Reports for its recommendations. Boy, I am glad that I did.

This printer has proved to be flawless. It prints photographs beautifully either via its software or by sticking in the card into the printer itself. The quality of the photographs is quite good (not exactly 100% store quality, but quite close), and it improves if you use good quality paper.

It scans easily and the resulting document is of good quality. The software that comes with the printer is quite easy to use and is easily compatible with my Mac. If that's the case, then I would imagine that it's even more compatible with PCs, as Mac compatibility usually is not high on the list of manufacturers.

The printing speed and quality of just plain black and white documents is exceptional. While not rising to the quality or speed of an office level laser printer, it comes quite close and offers a lot of features that an office laser jet doesn't.

The paper doesn't jam easily (like I think it does on some many other printers), and the printer is easy to set up and use.

What's especially teriffic is, unlike some other brands that will remain unmentioned, this printer will still print even if certain cartridges (e.g., colour cartridges for a b&w print job) are empty.

I would recommend this printer without hestiation. Great value for the money. Great print product. Great Mac compatibility. Great features.

Review: Best printer I've ever owned
by: Clarence Donath on date: December 19, 2006
The editorials and top-rated reviews of this printer say everything there is to say about this printer.

I'd have given this printer 5 stars if it weren't for a few things that bug me.

1. The front door that's supposed to automatically open doesn't always open , neither when something is printed, or when pressing the manual open button. I have to hit the door a few times for it to open. One of the other reviewers mentioned this about theirs too, and said it's probably not 'broken in' yet. I hope that's the case. In any case, I just leave the door open so paper doesn't get jammed up inside.

2. I was hoping fax reception would allow me to choose my PC as the destination, rather than it always printing the fax, but this is not a choice.

3. I wasn't looking for a printer that could print on CDs, and it's not a published feature, but it IS an option for the European models. There is a 'hack' to enable this, as mentioned by another reviewer, but why disable this feature for US models? Just the fact that it's disabled on models sold in the US bugs me.

Anyway, I'm glad I've finally found a good quality printer. I'm through with HP and Epson, until the technological tide changes anyway.

My HP printers always ended up with paper pick-up problems, and the integrated print head in the ink cartridge price killed me. Both HP and Epson's electronics would just give up after a few years. Only time will tell the quality of this Canon product.

Review: Very pleased with quality of prints and numerous options
by: TMac on date: December 19, 2006
I have had this for several months now.

The photo prints are excellent when using good photo paper. Very happy with this aspect.

The scanning to file/PDF is awesome.

The fax took a very long time to get it working both outgoing and incoming. Quality is good.

Copying is very nice as well.

Scanning from glass v/s ADF is a little irritating. One uses black for black and the latter uses colors for black. I don't like that waste of ink just so they can make me buy more.

Not being able to hook up an answering machine and fax on the same line with out the phone/answer not plugged into the back of this machine is almost a deal breaker for many. Works OK for me presently. But in general, this almost precludes it from being a SOHO tool. Cordless phones with the base somewhere else and the printer close but not on your desk and not being able to have the fax always hooked up is very irritating.

The ability to scan/copy and reduce, or reduce to multiple images to print on one page is great.

Cyan ink died on me before I used even 1/3 of it. Canon sent me out a replacement quick and easy. However, I was still with out it for a few days and you can not print even straight black with out it. I hate mfgs that do this. Not to allow you to use it only as a B&W printer for the rest of your life with out full color cartridges is a slimy way to do business.

I would buy it again, but not if someone came out with the same general product but one that did not have the fax limitations and or allowed printing with out all colors being available.

Review: Very impressed with this All-In-One Printer!
by: Jeffrey L. Peterson on date: December 17, 2006
This printer is better than I even anticipated. First of all it looks great and secondly it seems to be built with quality in mind. Setup was a snap with easy to read setup instructions and clear diagrams. Scans are great and very fast! Text prints are great! I was extremely impressed with the photo output. The copier worked great too. I haven't had a chance to FAX yet, but then I don't plan on doing much faxing. I would suggest anyone interested in a all-in-one printer for the home office to consider this product. I am very pleased with my Canon Pixma MP830!

Review: Bought after TONS of research on multi-printers
by: S. Gunnell on date: December 17, 2006
I literally spent two weeks looking over specifications, features, prices, customer feedback and checking different review sites. It was a close battle between two printers, but I chose this one.

So far, it is GREAT. Love the dual paper feed (I use one for regular paper and the other for shipping labels for my eBay sales) No more switching out paper back and forth.

The LCD screen is very cool, makes any task simple by following on screen instructions.

Great photo quality in my opinion. (Im no expert) and the printer itself looks great. Double sided printing is another over the top feature that put one of these in my home.

Hey guys, guess what, any printer will use a lot of ink printing pictures. Its not like the printer is secretly hiding ink, its all going on the pictue to create detail and depth. Set it for a low resolution if you want to save ink.

I am very pleased with it overall.

Review: MP830--Master of intuition and design!
by: T. Wells on date: December 16, 2006
Canon has outdone itself again by bringing the consumer yet another excellent machine worthy of its name! When researching the best printers available for serious photographers, I specifically looked for the kind of printer that would meet the demands for quality and ease of use that the MP830 easily achieves. One of the greatest features is the card slot located conveniently on the front that supports (CF)Compact Flash Type I/II, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, (SD)Secure Digital and MultiMedia cards. This card slot allows me to print my pictures without having to use my computer. (Note that xD-Picture cards, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick Pro Duo, and miniSD cards can all be easily inserted into the Card Slot using the provided adapter.) One can also print directly from your digital camera provided it is PictBridge compliant. Basically, this means you can only take advantage of this feature if your digital camera is a Canon. Editing and cropping without using a computer is also a handy feature incorporated in the MP830.

My only indirect complaint with the MP830 is the premium price that consumers pay for ink cartridges. Although earlier models of Canon printers have used smaller cartridges, the MP830 uses five medium-size cartridges that will last a little longer. For moderate users, expect to replace your cartridges every six months and anticipate paying between $50 and $60 for a complete set of Canon-brand ink cartridges. I do NOT recommend re-manufactured cartridges with the MP830. Although the price is tempting, using re-manufactured cartridges has back-fired each and every time for me.

I bought this last Spring because I liked the idea of being able to copy double sided, scan, print photos etc. I am a classroom teacher. While, the printer copies well, the photos are just so-so. I print a lot of school related photos and everytime I do a batch (I only have 16 kids in my class) I end up changing at least one cartridge. I haven't figured what I'm actually spending per photo, but know that it would be much cheaper to run to the store and use the photo machines or send them to an online store to be printed. I bought this machine to make make my school job easier, but it's been more of a headache. I am constantly running out to buy more ink which usually runs about $14 per cartridge (keep in mind that their are 5 ink cartridge colors needed) or $50 per set. I have not used the scan or fax functions so can't comment on that. The photos are okay if you use the highest settings. I actually found that my school photos come out better on cheap xerox paper that I then laminate versus the expensive photo paper. When I try to use the photo paper I get lots of lines running through! Don't waste your money, there are better printers out there! I did a lot of research before I bought this one and wish I had listened when other people commented on how much ink this printer drinks. I think I convinced myself that it the pluses would outweigh the minuses, but they didn't! We will be buying a more economical printer this year.

Review: CANON PIXMA MP830 - ANOTHER ONE FOR THE WOOD PILE
by: Jane Consumer on date: December 7, 2006
I bought this printer in November 2006 to replace an EPSON RX620 that kept getting paper jams. I liked the idea that the Canon had the auto document feeder and I also wanted the capability to fax. For the most part I love this printer. It is very fast. The auto document feeder works well. I have copied 1 sided documents to 2 sided document. And I have copied multi-page documents using the auto doc feed. The fax also works well. THE PROBLEM I AM HAVING IS THAT THIS PRINTER CANNOT SCAN IN AND ACCURATELY REPRODUCE A PHOTO. When I had my Epson, I had absolutely no problem doing this. I simply scanned the photo in and printed it, and the copy looked identical to the original. THAT IS NOT THE CASE WITH THE CANON. I CANNOT GET THE COLORS OF THE COPY TO LOOK LIKE THE ORIGINAL. I SPENT OVER TWO HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH CANON TECH SUPPORT WITH NO LUCK. SO TOMORROW I AM GOING TO BOX THIS UP, TAKE IT BACK TO THE STORE WHERE I PURCHASED IT, AND EVEN THOUGH THEY ONLY HAVE A 30 DAY MONEY BACK GUARANTEE, I AM NOT LEAVING THE STORE UNTIL I GET MY MONEY (OR STORE CREDIT) BACK. Then I will simply by an inexpensive printer. I've had it with the expensive all-in-ones. (they should call them some-in-ones).

Review: good features but ink tank protection system is a real hassle
by: anonymous on date: November 21, 2006
I chose this machine because of the good feature set and generally good reviews, but I regret the purchase.

The ink tanks are an almost constant problem. I'm using the original ink tanks that came with the machine, and most times when I turn the machine on it gives an error message, either that there are two ink tanks of the same color, or that it can't recognize one of the ink tanks. In either case, the machine will refuse to print or copy anything, even in black and white, until the error is cleared. That requires several iterations of remove/reinsert the ink tanks, and/or reboot the printer.

Probably I would buy an HP machine if I could do it over. This one is way too much trouble.

Review: Outshines the competition
by: Dina on date: November 16, 2006
I did a lot of shopping around before purchasing this printer, including testing it and other models for myself as well as reading reviews. It definitely had the best print quality -- especially noticeable in color -- compared to its similar-priced competitors. Other (higher-priced) printers can produce higher-quality photo prints, but for an all-around all-in-one machine, you can't beat the MP830.

My only complaint is that it doesn't come with the USB cable needed to attach it to the computer. When purchasing a printer of this sophistication and price, one would expect it to come with all necessary cables to save the consumer the hassle of hunting down an appropriate one.

If you don't need the bells and whistles of the MP830, the MP530 is an excellent alternative for about $80 less. There's very little difference in basic functions except that the 830 has a higher scan resolution.

Review: able to use calling card with fax
by: Diane Johnson on date: November 14, 2006
When I needed to replace the multifunction machine I used since 1998 (Brother 7150C)I chose Canon PIXMA 830. It has a hook button and speaker so I can use my calling card to fax out. I'm disappointed that I can't get the ink at my local Walmart. I'm satisfied with the copy quality and ease of use.

Review: Great printer/fax/copier/scanner/Picture printer
by: Pic100 on date: November 13, 2006
Not only this printer does everything but it does it well.
Easy to use and set-up, the printing is fast for an ink-jet and the quality is good. Pictures printing is amazingly good for the price of the printer.
Ink consumption is very reasonnable when the use is mixed between office printing and pic printing. So far nothing wrong.

Review: Works Very Well
by: Kenneth Fernandez on date: November 13, 2006
My primary need for an all-in-one printer are mainly for scanning, copying and printing documents. For these purposes the Canon MP830 performs very well. Scanning speed is acceptable and the multi-sided scanning works like a charm. The auto document feeder was especially useful for me. I would just load all the papers I want scanned and then just wait until its done. I can either leave the computer or do something else as it works in the background. The scanning software has some bugs but nothing that will bring down the system (although I do use a Mac and have OS X). Copying, both B&W and color, also works fine. I have not owned nor tried other all-in-one printers but the speed at which it copies and prints is fast enough for me. I have not yet tried printing photos although it will be very rare that I would use that function.

In summary, I would give the printer itself 5 stars. The only reason I gave it 4 is because the included software has some bugs. The printer works well with both my iMac G5/Mac OS 10.4 and Win XP PC workstation.

Review: Satisfied with my MP830
by: Robert C. Hall on date: November 12, 2006
My mp830 has performed well in the time that I've had it. My family members have found it easy to use as well. I was saddened at the early demise of my Epson cx6400 which suffered from a common problem of dried ink clogging the feeder tube. I chose the Canon after reading good reviews, and I got it for an excellent price right here on Amazon plus free shipping. It still sells for more at my local Office Depot and Best Buy. In truth I haven't tried all of it's claimed capabilities, but I'm happy with what it's been able to do thus far.

Review: A good all round printer

This printer is a good match to my needs, (light use) the only function we don't use is the Fax.

I am pleased with the quality of the photo prints

Review: Pixma MP830
by: S Kendall on date: November 10, 2006
I have had this for just over a year, and it has performed very well. For an AIO photo printing is good; not as good as a dedicated photo printer, but adequate. The scanner/copier works well. I did not need fax capabilities, which is one of the reasons that I chose this one. The only thing that I would like to have is more capability for network printing. It will print, but doesn't communicate back through the network. That is the reason for 4, not 5 stars.

Review: cannon Pixma MR830 when it works it is wonderful
by: C. Fritsch on date: November 10, 2006
I purchased my Canon PIXMA MP830 ALL-IN-ONE 9/30 and on Nov 4th it broke. During the time it worked the print qualty was wonderful, and I enjoyed all the features it had. However, I had a HP 6110 all-in-one for 6 years and never had only problems with it so, to say that I was dissappointed is mild! I was mad! Canon has since set me a refurnished machine so, lets hope this one lasts longer than 5 wks.

Review: Excellent all-in-one printer
by: DNopp on date: November 10, 2006
I bought this printer for my home office. I needed a high quality printer that could print black-and-white text pages quickly, but also be capable of photo-quality prints. I also wanted the fax capability that many of the all-in-ones lack.

So far I am extremely impressed with this printer's capabilities. The print quality is very high and B&W prints are very quick. The printer has a cartidge option so you don't have to have an unsightly stack of paper hanging off the back of the printer. Also, the printer has an auto-feed option which is handy for multiple page scans or faxes. All in all, I highly recommend this printer.

Review: Perfect for Home Office
by: D. Doerr on date: November 10, 2006
I love my Canon PIXMA MP 830 Office All-in-One machine. It was easy to set up. It's easy to use. The quality is great. I am technologically challenged and managed to set it up and use each of the functions without any help from anyone, which is saying a lot. The only thing negative I can say about it is that the ink didn't last very long. I am comparing it to my HP DeskJet 952C. However, it may not be a fair comparison. I didn't use my HP printer nearly as often, so that may be why the ink seemed to last longer. I will be more selective as to what I print in the future and keep extra ink on hand.

Review: Great product; easy to use
by: Kathryn A. Keeler on date: November 7, 2006
Bought this printer a few months ago; very easy to set up; no configuration problems with XP; print quality is good -- still not as good as if I were to have the photos professionally printed, but just fine for what we need; fax works well. All in all, I'm pleased with the purchase.

Review: Printer other than HP OfficeJet
by: R. Michael Wilensky on date: November 6, 2006
I decided to make a change in my choice of printer because my brand of choice was too expensive for the comperable features this unit had. I love therinter, however it's a little more expensive keeping up with replacement ink cartridges because I have not been able to find a recycle/refil place for the Canon ink cartridges. Functionally the unit is very easy to use and has not failed me once. I like its sleep feature so that I can leave it on 24/7 for faxes woithou waisting energy. I wish their software had a direct fax with coversheet option which was prtesent on the HP unit.

I look for a printer which can print, copy, scan and fax in black or color. I thought Canon Pixma mp 830 all-in-one can fulfill my requirements. I've already used it for several months. So far, so good.

I turn on.I know there is something wrong, but I am tired to do the replacement again, it's working thought.I think this product can't be ship by UPS,because UPS always throw the box to the floor. Now I just hate it because everytime I turn on the MP830, It make noise.

It's a little confusing at first but once you read the manual it's a GREAT MACHINE!!! I would recommend buying one!!

Review: Technical difficulties but OK
by: L. MCCOLLUM on date: November 4, 2006
The original unit worked fine. Strangely, it needed return because Canon introduced versions of MP830 for different global regions. The unit I got was a 'global' unit with features that worked just about everywhere. The problem was that this specific unit didn't have DRPD (distinctive ring) capability, which I needed for faxing. Apparently, US models have features not available on other models and vice versa.

Canon sent another, which I got the next day.

Make sure to compare actual features found in the menus against functions featured in the manual. The presence or absence of DRPD is a good indicator of which unit you may have.

The ink cartridges are cheaper and smaller than most so they need more frequent replacement for moderate to heavy use. The duplex feature is particularly slow but that's no surprise for a model in this price range. If fast or frequent duplexing is important, this model is not for you.

Otherwise, this printer does what it's supposed to and you get what you pay for: decent quality for a moderate price.

Review: Great ADF scanner
by: maximom229 on date: October 25, 2006
I bought this because i had more than 50,000 documents to scan and this machine has done beautifully. Never a serious problem at all. It does eat ink faster than i'd like and the color while printing pics is not great. I haven't figured out why the fax won't connect but i haven't messed with it much since i have another fax machine. So, if you need to batch scan tons of stuff, this is a GREAT machine. If you are looking to print high-color pics, this is not for you.

Review: Great--but watch ink prices!!!
by: Mr. Scott D. Desalvo on date: October 19, 2006
This product is the best multifunction inkjet printer on the market, bar none. It is a great update to Canon's MP780, in that print and scan speeds have increased, and the scanner scans both sides of a document at once, which is super. Based on its features and performance, it is a 5 out of 5 stars product. Nothing else comes close.

The down side is the ink prices. True, 5 separate ink tanks mean you only replace what you use, but the ink tanks are small, and run about $20 per cartridge, though you can get them cheaper online--but watch the jacked up shipping charges that put the per cartridge price back up at the $20 level. No one has come out with third party or aftermarket ink, because with this printer, Canon has "chipped" each cartridge, essentially making producing after market or third party ink replacements impossible. Several inkjet ink websites have been promising to have workable non-OEM ink cartridges for this model, but with the product being almost a year old now, there are still none available. It must be a pretty tough chip to emulate. That means no $5 ink for you--you pay full price.

I didn't know this when I bought it, and had I known, I probably would have bought another close-out MP780, which has 90% of the featuresof the MP830, but can use non-Canon ink cartridges. And of course, this fact is not something Canon would announce. My older Canon multifunction (at home) still works like a champ on non-Canon ink, and a full replacement of ink costs about $25--and I run through 2 or so sets of carts per year. $50 per year for a great multifunction that prints great photos? Not too shabby! This newer model at my office is going to cost me $100+ per ink change, so I have relegated it to photo-only printing, and mainly use its scanning and occasionally, copying functions. In fact, I might start printing photos at home so I do not spend ridiculous money on ink at work. I dislike using it to print anything, because I know that if I match my use on my home machine here at the office, it is going to cost me $200 or $300 a year for this machine. With ink prices that high, and a new machine costing about $200, we are almost at the point where it makes sense to buy a new once every time the ink runs out! I understand these companies need to make a profit, but if they cut their ink prices in half, they'd still make a killing on per unit ink sales, and consumers would be willing to pay a premium for OEM cartridges. We just dont want to be complete worked over on the ink, which $20 cartridges is.

Review: Very Good MultiFunction Printer - Recomended
by: T. Eichman on date: October 19, 2006
A short review here. I've had this printer for about 8 months now and have been very impressed. All aspects of the printer work quite well and photos also come out good looking even though that's not this printer's main purpose. Installation went well and I have had no reliability issues with it over the last 8 months. That time includes several semesters with a lot of printing done for grad school.

As the IT manager for our company, I've used many HP and Epson printers and this one is far better than the HPs and just as good, if not better than, the late model Epsons. I use this printer at home.

Overall, it's a great MFP - only downside is that the printer output is a bit slow, but otherwise, I highly recommend this for all your printing, copying, faxing, and scanning needs. Also, as with most printers today, the replacement ink cartridges are a bit on the pricey side. If the output was faster, I'd give it a 5 star rating.

this is a sorry piece of equipment! It jams, jams and jams again. Color reproduction is not reliable, sometimes it's great, then not so good - same ink cartridges. Back to Epson for me!

Review: TERRIBLE RELIABILITY
by: Nick on date: October 15, 2006
I have similar problems to the reviewer below. Even though I have used the printer very lightly, it jams regularly on Canon photo paper and then spills ink everywhere. Today it went into "service error 5700" and it doesn't work any more, even after rebooting it five times.
I will not buy a Canon printer ever again.

Review: Good overall buy with a few minor shortcomings
by: M. D. Maxwell on date: September 30, 2006
I just got the Pixma MP830 and have had a chance to use all functions but the FAX. The print quality is high, and the process of scanning an image and then printing out another copy of what I just scanned was surprisingly easy. Among the positive aspects of this item are:

- Easy to use and setup
- Good print quality, both text and photos
- Copying is pretty fast
- Memory card slots (standard compact flash and SD)
- Can use it without a computer attached (though some functions limited)

As for the shortcomings...

- This is probably just the unit we have, but we noticed that the sheet feeder on top of the unit sometimes grabs more than one sheet at a time when running several sheets through it. Additionally, this top sheet feeder won't hold more than about 10 sheets.

- It's BIG and HEAVY. If you have limited space, you should make sure to check the specs on this item before making the buy. I had heard it was a little oversized, and was prepared for that. But it was even bigger than I thought.

- The software that comes with it is OK, but not great. The specs indicate that the scanner can scan as high as 2400 X 4800 dpi optically, yet the scanning software that comes with the unit only allows for 600 dpi. It is apparently compatible with other TWAIN drivers (like in Photoshop), so hopefully we can get better scanning power when we use another application.

So, overall, when it comes to the important stuff - it gets the job done. There are a few minor nits that buyers should be aware of.

Review: So far, so good
by: K. Frampton on date: September 22, 2006
I've had this product for a few months now and it's been a high quality, reliable printer for our small business. I wish the fax function would work a little better with vmail (not attached to the printer), but it's a small inconvenience.

I'm still on my first tanks of ink and would recommend to folks who are running out of ink quickly to adjust their print settings to "fast" or "custom" on prints that don't need the highest quality to save on ink. I don't see big differences on b/w document prints, but it saves a lot on ink. Also, it does have two paper tray feeds, so use them both to keep it going longer.

I also do freelance photography and have noticed that the Canon does high quality scans/prints, but you need to experiment a little with the paper settings and try some different papers (brands/sheens) to get the best color reproduction. The house brand papers generally don't hold the ink as well as Canon/Kodak and better papers. I've noticed that "matte" papers turn out better than "glossy" as well.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a good all-in-one unit, especially for the cost.

A thoroughly thoughtful design. I have the pixma ip5000 and needed to add a multi-function printer to replace my hp k60. Really easy to use and software has a lot of added features, scan to pdf among them.

Paper tray is a little small on paper capacity in comparison to my pixma, but other than that it is a great deal.

Review: Most Unreliable Product I Ever Purchased
by: J. Evans on date: September 18, 2006
I bougth this product from Amazon and it failed after printing only 17 pages. Canon would only provide a reburbished unit as a replacement, so I sent it back to Amazon and received a replacement from them. The second printer has also now failed with error 6800. Both times the unit failed the display characters were only in Japanese and the printer would not repond to inputs of any kind in anyway what so ever. The time wasted and agravation experienced with this printer make it, in my mind, a very poor purchase for the money. Actually, even if the printer was only $50.00, given the problems I have had, I still wouldn't buy another one.

Review: Great All-In-One, but it Drinks Expensive Ink
by: Transit on date: September 13, 2006
I purchased this printer because I wanted an All-In-One device that would still give me quality printing. The print quality is great and the fax, scanner, and copier are fine HOWEVER this printer drinks ink and it is EXPENSIVE ink. I can't find the ink at COSTCO , where I normally buy discount, and it seems unavaileable online for the most part. I already miss my old HP. This printer follows the Gillete shaver model. Give them a cheap holder and make a killing on the accessories (ink in this case).
