HP LaserJet 1018 Printer (CB419A#ABA)

Fabulous little machine. Doesn't have the long warmup time in between print jobs like the Samsung I had. Can't beat it for the price.
If you wanted an inexpensive laser printer with very little hassle and really quite decent performance, you chose wisely. If you're going to nitpick over something you purchased for so little, in my opinion you're looking a gift horse in the mouth. It's very much not the sort of laser one would use to draft a novel or produce a company-wide memo. This is absolutely as advertised - an easy to use personal laser printer that will perform very well for the money. Don't put it in your office and don't use it for heavy production. When used for short runs that quietly thank your wallet, this is a real gem.
So far this piece of junk has been a complete headache. The software won't install completely on my Dell desktop with Windows XP. (but it will on my new Toshiba laptop). It should be the simplest thing to install a printer, yet HPs software is crap. WORST OF ALL, when I try to uninstall, the 'HP Order Reminder' that was installed first for some reason, they won't let me uninstall it! Like I want a 'reminder' of when to buy more HP products.
Furthermore, there is no way to connect the printer to your computer!! Yes, this is true! It is like selling a car with no tires! I had to go out to Office Depot to purchase a printer cable for $30 bucks. What a joke!
Furthermore, the printer comes with zero instructions. Just the CD, but the CD won't install. So now I have a printer that won't work, a $30 cable, and software embedded on my computer that will forever remind me to purchase more HP products.
Works well. I particularly like the fact that it prints on light cardstock and legal size.
I got it one week ago. It is fast to get the printout. The price can not beat especially during the promotion period. I highly recommend it to anyone.
This is my first laser print. It works great! And the price is so reasonable. It prints fast too. I like it very much.
My epson ink jet printer stopped working after less then 2 years of use. I had to replace the ink twice even with minimal use. I figured I would get a laser printer this time. For a little over 70 bucks this is a great buy. I have had it for a couple of weeks and I have had no problems.
This printer is ideal for anyone who wants a starter laser printer. It is fast to start, easy to load, and at 12 pages a minute, never feels like it's taking forever to finish a job. The Laserjet 1018 is a great alternative to inkjet printers. I haven't seen how long toner lasts, though.
Product was perfect for my office needs. I was using an inkjet printer and going through ink like crazy. This item is much more efficient.
This is a fast little laser printer that gets the job done. I print about 10-20 pages a day so I don't need a heavy duty printer. The setup was easy, and I managed to set it up within twenty minutes. It's great being able to enjoy the convenience of fast printing after using an inkjet for the past ten years. I've had two HP all-in-one inkjets that both lasted over three years each, and I'm hoping that this printer will last for a few years, too.
This is my first laser printer and I'm really impressed with it. The printer is quiet, fast and was very easy to set up. The price was also a big plus.
If you buy this printer also order the USB cable for $6.99 so you can connect it to your computer.
very easy to review: reliable, fast start up, fairly fast printing, no paperjams, accepts all kind op paper thickness, good print quality. And not expensive at all
Fast, inexpensive, easy to set up, small footprint. Great printer from a company that knows how to do printers... A+++!!!!
Was looking for a reasonable monochrome laser printer and found it in the
HP Laserjet 1018 Printer. It's fast and very easy to program. You can't go wrong with this printer.
I highly recommend this. Only good things to say. This was inexpensive and I received it in 2 days with free shipping. It's very fast, crisp, easy to install, small footprint.
I received my package within three days via the Super Saver Shipping (cost me nothing). The printer is great, too. I used the Brother 1440 series before and now upgraded to HP and I'm impressed. The printer shoots out the first page immediately without having to warm up, and its very light weight and small size making it more portable. I love it.
i was so tired of buying ink only to have them run out or the heads to dry up I'll use laser jets forever
I bought this printer because I'm in school and do a lot of black/white printing. My previous inkjet was running out of ink and always smudged. I don't really need a color printer so getting the laserjet is actually a better buy all around. Easy set up and easy directins for double-sided printing too. Unit doesn't take up much space and it's not too loud either.
My old HP Laserjet 4L gave out after about 10 years, or at least the hinges on the door to the toner compartment broke and it would not print. I ordered this new printer and, as always, Amazon is a great place to shop, I ordered it on a Friday and it came on Monday, which is very good service since I live in Hawaii. The only problem is the printer does not come with a USB cord. So, if you are replacing an older printer and are behind the times, you have to go and buy a USB cord. The printer was very easy to install.
I do a lot of printing and was tired of paying "color print" prices for a lot of text printing so I ordered the HP Laserjet 1018 printer. I have been extremely pleased with the quality of the print and the speed of the printer. The pages do curl when they first come out of the printer but I expected this. If you lay them flat and wait until they cool, they do flatten out. This has been NO PROBLEM for me. I have owned the printer for three months and have not replaced the cartridge, and I do a LOT of printing for a class I teach. I did find that I have printer problems if I have both my color and laser jet printer turned on at the same time. The problem was solved by leaving the printers turned off until I get ready to print and not having the printers in the "on" position simultaneously. The title says it all - I love this printer.
First of all, let me say how great it is to be able to purchase things through Amazon. Overall, I don't think you can beat their prices / handling / shipping and service. I've made at least 12 purchases from Amazon over the last 12 - 24 months and have been satisfied each time. I can't say that about most stores!
In any case, so far I am very happy with this printer. I suppose that one of these days I will need to order my first new toner cartridge. Given the prices of the printers vs. the toner cartridges, I'm almost tempted to just by a new printer! The printer works great, installed easily, and has given me no problems. I need to see if there is some sort of diagnostic that will tell me how close I am to needing a new toner cartridge. It is a simple, no bells and whistles, but seemingly reliable printer. Hopefully it will stay that way.
While I am sure this is a great printer for the price, it will not work with Macs, despite what an employee at a large computer chain told me. There are no Mac drivers for the 1018 and none of the work arounds listed on the net seem to work. I had to return this printer to Amazon and ordered the HP 1022 that is Mac compatible.
It had been around 12 years since I had used an HP Laserjet printer. This one I chose for its compact design and the memory of a bigger office version that worked very well. I haven't been disappointed. HP still does laserjets right.
It arrived very quickly and I'm very satisfied with how it works. The papers do come out a bit wrinkled from the toner or heat, but it dries out/cools quickly and becomes perfectly flat.
The description is incorrect, this is NOT a color printer! In the description under "What's in the box" it says "HP Color LaserJet 1018 Printer". I hope someone can update the description so it doesn't confuse other buyers.
I would like you to know I'm so glad I purschased this printer.It sure saves on the ink & the print is very good for the type of work I do.
I would recommend this to any small office that needs a a non color printer.
Also it was shipped & here before I expected it.
Would order from you again because of your great service.
I have owned this printer for about 4 months and have had no problems yet.
If you don't need color this machine does an excellent job. The printer is ready to go in seconds and pages are printed quickly. The cartridge mileage is decent and it almost never jams. Well worth the money.
I've spent hours researching cheap printers on computer forums, and I've found that most people rate the HP Laserjet 1018 as the best of the cheapo laser printers (Nov-Dec 2006).
In my personal experience with it, it turned out to be much faster, quieter, cheaper, and higher quality than any other cheap (under $150) printer I've ever used, and I've tried about a dozen in that price range (mostly inkjets, but also some lasers). The cost per page is much lower than with inkjets, even if you refill your inktanks yourself. And you only have to replace the ink every few thousand pages on the laser, instead of every few hundred pages on inkjets. And HP's reliability is better than the other brands of laser printers.
Unless you need to print in color, this is the way to go for a cheapo printer.
It takes up very little desk space, and prints good quality documents fast.
Excellent printer, very inexpensive, set up in 3 minutes, runs like a champ, very quiet, almost jam-proof, quiet small. The only wrinkle is in the small print: you need a USB printer cable (does not come in the box) and if you don't own one, be prepared to trot out to your local Staples to buy one if you want to use this puppy.
Other than that minor annoyance, I remain very impressed that a printer I would have expected to pay $1,000 for just a few years ago can be had for so little, and in such a small package today.
Pros: price, speed, quality, simplicity, size
Cons: no cable included, holds only ~150 sheets in tray
Price/Performance - about as good as it gets.
This is a quick, quiet machine, and so far it works for me. A relatively new model, I was told it was the replacement for the 1020, but I'm not sure that's the case. In any event, it is extremely simple to set up and operate, and it doesn't take up much space. It's a big improvement over my inkjet, an HP deskjet 960c. I figure my cost is about 5 cents a page. So far, highly recommended.
I am impressed by the performance of this machine, for the following reasons:
- easy to set up;
- very quiet;
- prints smoothly;
- manual duplex printing is a breeze;
- compared to my previous HP laser purchased some years ago that often got paper jam, this one is a real improvement.
My Kudo to HP for a job well done !!!!

It takes up very little desk space, and prints good quality documents fast.
had to send back the first one since it would always say that the cover was open. When I got the second, everything is well.... also have it hooked up as a network printer.... have not been successful in getting it to work as a network printer with Mac oS X....
All in all.... good printer for the price.
Everything is OK but the cartridge is used up soon.
My friends always complaining of not having enough money for ink so I wanted to get a laser printer. This one is so good because it prints fast and it's small so it doesn't take up much room on my desk. It doesn't really matter that it only holds 150 pages, just put more in. This is a college kids best friend when it comes to 10 page papers. USB cables are cheap although it is kind of a bummer when you want to set it up and start using it right away. Other than that, it's amazing and a good money-saver.
This printer is okay, but I was disappointed to learn that:
* It has no parallel port. It seems that most modern printers only connect via a USB port. That's a real problem if you're using a DOS based word processor, because DOS programs don't recognize USB ports. So you must go through all sorts of computer hoops and patches, and find drivers, to work around it. If you can even do that.
Of course, this should not be an issue for most users. But if it is, then be aware of it.
* The tray only holds 150 pages. When it runs out of paper, it stops printing. And unlike the older HP 5P, when you reload it with pages, it doesn't automatically start printing again. You have to hit the "Retry" command via the computer.
* The tray is uncovered, so the pages collect dust.
* This 1018 is of flimsier build than older bottom-rung HP laser printers. It seems that HP is now targeting the low-end laser market, with more cheaply built printers.
Of course, those older bottom-rung HPs weren't cheap. My first laser printer was the bottom-rung HP 2P, which I bought in 1990 for $900. It was still working in 1995, when I traded it in for an HP 5P -- which cost nearly as much and is still going strong.
I don't expect this HP 1018 to last as long, but it's still a good buy. It includes a print cartridge, which is a $90 value -- so it's like buying a cartridge and getting a printer tossed it for practically free.
Some people have complained of its slow speed, but until now I was using the HP 5P which runs at 6 ppm, so the 1018's 12 ppm seems very fast to me.
I only wish this 1018 had a parallel port. Since it doesn't, this HP 1018 will supplement my HP 5P.
I recently purchased the HP 1018 after much agonizing whether to go for a B&W laser printer or a multi function for the home. I came to the conclusion that 98% of my needs would be met with a fast and cheap printer - for the odd requirements of scanning old photos or copying important documents, I could use the services at my office or a local Kinko's.
The HP 1018 met several requirements. First, its compact. Second, it's per page cost (thanks to being a laser and not an inkjet printer) is low. Finally, it prints pages fast (much much faster than any inkjet on the market). I generally need to print out itineraries, airline e-tickets, articles to read offline and therefore had no need of a color printer. Besides, the ability to add envelopes into the feeder is a nice touch, especially when sending out holiday greeting cards in bulk.
Small observations - The paper feeder/drawer will stay open and hence take up a few additional inches of space. There is no USB cable (shame on them trying to save a few pennies. The included disk tried hard to install all sorts of "freebie" software before succumbing to my stubbornness of refusing to do so (after this installing the drivers was a breeze.) The printer comes with a "introductory" toner cartridge good for 1000 pages (regular cartridges sold in retail are good for twice as many pages.)
Overall, I am very pleased with the purchase. I was waiting for the price of laser printers to drop to around the hundred dollar level as well as get compact enough for use in the home and it was worth the wait. At a cost of under 5 cents a page (including paper and ink) its a steal.
