Review: Excellent Product

I bought this unit 2 month ago, and I have to admit, this is my great!!!
We have to use in our network at office, and as soon as you sent some document to print, it does very fast. The copy cuality is very good. The fax, just Excellent. More, the Saving mode is great because even if you send something to print, it stand in this mode and print the document!!
And as a gift, you can copy on duplex or just collate them.
Just, the best machine for low/medium use.

Review: A Nice Duplex Printer for Home / Home Office
by: Narayanan Narasimhan on date: June 19, 2007
I have used this machine for Printing, copying and occassional scanning.
I was using Lexmark Inkjet for few years and upgraded to this Laser Printer 3 months back.

Awesome features:

1. Very quiet performer
2. Environment friendly (in terms of saving energy and paper)
3. Friendly User Interface
4. Quick Set up; though some reviews scared me, it was easy to install
5. Printing: Very good quality at great speed

Not so awesome:

1. Sometimes it draws 2 papers and prints properly on the first one. Though it spits both the papers out, it beeps Error signal. Since there was no paper jam, I didn't know how to get rid of Error beep. No alerts or prompts; I had to re-start the printer to conitue my printing. This has happened 4 or 5 times in the last 3 months.

Review: A nice combination at a goo price point
by: T. F. Kocialski on date: June 19, 2007
I bought this as a replacement for a two year old Samsung Printer-Copier-Scanner. What a difference two years make! This thing is fast, the B&W copies are great, and the desktop real estate is not too much more than the Samsung. I really like the quick warmup from the "energy saver" state. A great bonus is the ease in which you can select two sided copying with multiple "pages per page." I printed out a document which occupied 15 pages of single sided copy on my Samsung in 4 pages of double sided, 2 pages per page, copy on this machine. So far, I'm lovin' it.

by: HTK on date: June 8, 2007
The only reason I didn't give this all in one printer 5 stars is that I have not yet subjected it to heavy use. That will take awhile. It is replacing a 10 year old printer that worked like a charm. I'm replacing it because I needed a new fax machine and having one machine rather than 2 in an office made good sense. Plus the Canon is faster and duplexes.

I'm not generally a fan of all in one products because one of the functions seems to suffer. But this seems to work fine. I haven't yet tested scanning a document into a pdf file yet, because I haven't had to do that yet.

Definitely worth looking at this product if you are looking for a smaller all in one printer.

Review: Nice printer
by: Ramesh C. Pandey on date: June 2, 2007
This is real nice printer. Using it on usrobotics wireless/printerserver and my both laptop and a desktop uses it . works perfect the printserver won't communicate both way for printer ink or scan , but printing is main job so works fine. I was little disappointed that the paper try does not close fully like in brother mfc, but flatbed scaner/copier is a real savior of copying license, passport and other small items. the power save mode is good as well .. hope does not take much power in that mode ..and the two sided printing is a real nice feature too. for the price i think it is the best printer around for home or small business usage ..

Review: What a great printer
by: F. Brown on date: May 29, 2007
Bought this because I was tired of refilling ink cartridges. This thing is far better than the HP I use at work and it is $50 cheaper. I would recommend this to anyone who is in school or has a small home office where color printing is not an issue.

Review: Excellent Product Overall
by: King of Everest on date: May 29, 2007
Overall I am very pleased with the product (I have been using it for only 2 days though - hence cannot comment on performance over time).

1) Laser printing is of very good quality especially considering the fact that the price of the printer is at $200.
2) ADF (automatic document feeder) is definitely a plus and is worth the additional $10-15 bucks you pay over the previous model Canon Image Class 3xxx
3) Copy functions work great - though you need to play to around with the settings to get the correct resolution for your document type (photo, text etc).
4) Yet to test the scanning features in more detail.
5) I was able to receive a fax. Sent a fax but no confirmation printout. Looked at the basic documentationn, advanced documentation no details anywhere as how to set this.

If at all a minor annoyance exists it is in the documentation. For e.g. Fax settings are very confusing to understand. I use a single line for both voice and fax and I have not been able to acheive a setting where it detects faxes and voice appropriately. I do not send faxes too often hence not overly concered about it.

Review: Wow, this is the way to go.
by: bayareakirk on date: May 25, 2007
Awesome:
1. Very quiet.
2. Goes in to hibernate quickly to save energy and bursts back to life instantly when needed.
3. Great print quality.
4. Does it all (except for color)including fax, copy, scan, and duplex printing.
5. Duplex printing saves a lot of resources (paper and money).
6. Most of the settings and buttons are user friendly.
Not so awesome:
1. The manual that comes with it is nice and easy to read and use, but skips too many "advanced features". For advanced features you must look at the online .pdf guides.
2. Even with the advanced guide, it is not immediately obvious to me how to set up the machine so it will screen calls as phone or fax. It wants to answer all calls as a fax machine. I need to experiment more with the available (but confusing) settings that should fix this.

I like having a do it all printer but also realized I no longer need or want color. Here's why:
1. Printing photos at home is not what the marketing would like us to believe. Sending photos to Kodak or Shutterfly (or any online photo printer) is cheaper, of better quality, and of more archival quality than printing at home. It also offers more choices of print size and paper quality and so forth. It's just not quite as fast. Email the photos in and have them in a few days or a week at most.
2. Color inkjet printers do not work well long enough. They frustrate me as contributing too greatly to our throw away society. It is cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy ink, print heads and other needed repairs that come up after a year or two of use.

This Canon is great and it is unreal that it lists at such a low price for the quality and functions you get.

Review: Canon Image Class MF4150 Laser Duplex printer
by: Jenny on date: May 23, 2007
This printer is an excellent little workhorse that takes up a very small footprint of space and provides an outstanding printed page. I bought it to scan batches of invoices and documents so that I could go paperless and this machine is perfect! It permits batch scanning so that you just load up the feeder and scan the stack into one PDF document that can be safely saved to your computer for years! No more file cabinets crowding your office....just scan and save!! The feeder doesn't jam or double-feed the pages. It's positively effortless. And the best part? It's a color scanner! And a copier, and a fax, and a printer! And it duplexes. As usual, Canon has created another fine machine. Definitely worth the money...crisp, clean printed pages and the toner is only about $65 for replacements. The reviews I read before purchasing it were accurate in their praises for this printer.

Review: Why have I been using inkjet printers for so long?!?!
by: E. Carlisle on date: May 21, 2007
After much frustration with many brands of inkjet printers, I'm surprised I didn't switch to laser sooner. After owning the MF4150 for a month, I must say that it's just "dreamy". I use it for home office purposes, mostly for printing and copying. The print quality is great with the double-sided printing being a HUGE plus. Double sided copying takes a bit more "paper flipping" and can't be accomplished through the ADR (as far as I know), but works well.

I would have liked the printer to work over a network, but I'm happy to settle for this price. With the money I saved, I picked up a Linksys WPSM54G print server (which is specially made for multifunction printers). Print was a breeze to set up, though I haven't figured out scanning or faxing over the network yet (less of a priority for me).

Another huge plus is the cost of printing. Inkjet printer ink is very expensive, and I think I messed up an inkjet printer with after-market ink. The Canon toner cartridges are comparatively inexpensive and I don't have to resort to after-market (and perhaps more questionable) toners.

Finally, the price is a no-brainer. Through a combination or price-matching and rebates, I was able to get the mf4150 for $[...]. Still, the $[...] price is hard to beat for the quality and features (especially when you compare it to other multiplex laser printers).

This is easily the best printer I've ever owned. :-)

Review: Scan to PDF by pressing 2 buttons!
by: Doron Avizov on date: May 18, 2007
I spent less than $250 and all I have to do to scan to PDF is:
1. Put originals on Auto Document Feeder
2. Press the SCAN button
3. Press the Start button
My multi-page searchable and selectable PDF opens in Adobe Acrobat Reader. Wow! Amazon sells less capable machines that can only scan to PDF in black and white only and without a flat bed scanner for $450-650 making this the best bargain on the planet. I admit I had to play with the driver settings in the Canon Toolbox to get the settings I want (scan to PDF, not JPG, grayscale, not color...) but I didn't have to read the manual and the thing is incredibly intuitive to use. I can't believe how fast it scans the documents. The ADF just sucks them right in like an industrial machine. I tried a new HP at Staples for $200 and it took forever to micro-feed the page in the ADF inching its way very slowly.

I did notice that even though the PDF looks nearly perfect, when I copy and paste into a text file some of the letters may be missing, especially if the original is italics, a funny font, or right near a graphic. Not a big deal for me but might be if you are a contract lawyer. I did NOT install the freebie third party software and I did not try the OCR setting in the Canon Toolbox so for all I know it's easily resolved using one of those two options. I don't care enough to find out. The scans are also skewed ever so slightly sideways when fed through the ADF. This is not enough of an issue if you're trying to share documents or submit receipts and if you need art and publishing grade scanning you probably want a dedicated scanner anyway.

The Canon driver and Toolbox is all you need. I'm not a fan of freebie teaser software that comes bundled with printers and is a challenge to uninstall. The Canon CD gives you the Custom option to not install programs you don't want. Thank you Canon!

Set up was relatively fast. I slowed myself down by reading the entire quick start guide first since this is my first laser printer and I didn't feel like screwing anything up. The only thing the install program does not do for you is set the "Canon MF4100 Series UFRII LT" as your default printer. I figured that out on my own when I clicked print and the computer wanted to print to the old printer that I had already removed. Right-click on the "Canon MF4100 Series UFRII LT" in "Printers and Faxes" and choose "Set as Default Printer" to resolve that issue. I've also tested 2 sided printing and it works like a charm.

2 sided copying:
One reviewer complained that this machine does not do 2 sided copying. I still have yet to read the manual but all I did was push the "COPY" button, then the "2-Sided" button then "Collate/2 on 1" button, put two papers on the ADF and pressed Start. One double-sided copy of both originals came out just as I expected. For all I know I pushed one button too many but it still did what I expected it to do.

This thing is seriously feature-laden. There are a lot of buttons on the control panel that are clearly labeled and look intuitive and while I probably should check out the manual to get a clue as to what are the many things it can do, the truth is I have no intention of ever reading the manual. For printing documents, scanning and 2-sided copying I didn't have to ready any instructions and those are the features I will use most. I can't believe how many features they packed in at this price point and that the ones I need actually work fast and reliably.

For one person or a small office of up to 4 people I think this canon is all you need. I would not want a group of 100 users slamming on this thing. It does not look designed for that. I suspect that's why it costs $250 and not 3 times more. An industrial machine would have a tougher paper tray that could withstand careless slamming and a rock solid output/paper catch instead of a plastic tabs sticking out. Not that it's a flimsy or weak looking plastic tab. It feels solid. But it's not a large workgroup machine. A large workgroup machine would also be rated for printing tens of thousands more pages per month than this thing probably is. I rarely print more than 100 pages per month and for me this is fine.

While I can tell it's not meant to support a group of 100 users and the printing volume that comes with that, I do NOT feel that the Canon looks fragile or poorly constructed. It looks like it should give me years of trouble free use. I have yet to see anything else in this price range with these features. Good job, Canon.

Review: Best MF machine I've had
by: Zig Schwartz on date: May 14, 2007
I've been through a bunch of the machines over the years and they all had problems from the beginning. The HP machines are poorly designed and poorly made. The Lexmarks couldn't feed paper straight. An older Canon I had was so noisy I couldn't use it at might without waking my kids. And the Dell - well, don't get me started on that one. This Canon is quite, adequately fast and easy to use. Envelopes feed easily and straight. The copy function works well. All around a strong performer.

Review: Mostly satisfied, especially at the price
by: Vivek Dalela on date: May 13, 2007
At the price (about 200 dollars), this was the printer that had most of the features I was looking for...and it pretty much lived up to all that it promised to begin with. Was delivered very fast, easy to install, looks good, laser printer, good clean prints, best thing is that it can print both sides...this helps me save paper and space for storing all the journal articles that a Ph.D. demands! Cartridge could be better, it promises to print only 2000 pages...which brings the cost to 3.5 cents per page...a little expensive. Yes, I did face one problem...after loading the software for the printer, my IE browser suddenly slowed down drastically...so I had to uninstall the scansoft and presto software...then it got OK. But then the scanning to pdf was not working, so I reinstalled presto, and it has been working well ever since. Overall, quite satisfied with all aspects of the machine...

Review: PERFECT - for the price I paid!
by: W. Chou on date: May 13, 2007
Paid $180 with no tax and free shipping. The best features are:
1. Duplex printing, duplex copying, and duplex scanning.
2. Fax from my PC or by itself.

Could be a little loud when scanning but bearable. This machine replaced an HP Laserjet 1012, Canon U670 scanner, and PC fax card. Individually I paid well over $200 for them and now for $180 I have one machine that does everything! I am able to scan and archive all kinds of documents now which was the main thing I was looking for. A document scanner with ADF costs at leat $400 dollars. This machines is probably not professional grade but I just need to scan maybe 20 pages a day which now takes two minutes compared to half an hours with the flatbed scanner (placing and replacing each page and waiting for the scanner head to return to its original position after each scan). Absolutely love this machine!!!

Review: Perfect Multi-Function Machine for a Small Office
by: Richard Hughes on date: May 12, 2007
This unit has everything an office needs all wrapped into a compact unit. It prints on both sides of the paper if you desire, copies, scans and faxes to perfection, and has the reliability of laser. The only limitations are that it doesn't print in color and it won't copy legal size paper (it will print legal though). The software package is excellent; it even includes a quite good optical character recognition program. The cost is amazing, barely more than the duplexing unit of some printers.

Review: nice fast in home office printer
by: L. E. Squier on date: May 7, 2007
This printer seems to work well. If I am printeing in bulk (>20 pages) is has gotten jammed. But this is not the inteneded use for this printer. Also, I am not sure how to turn the fax option off, other than disconnecting the phone line.

Review: Excellent multifunction (even has duplexing)
by: J. Purnell on date: May 7, 2007
Fabulous product. Very fast. very reliable. Very full featured. The sheet feeder & the duplexing set this unit apart from other offerings in this class. Well worth the small investment. The only significant ommission from the product is networking, but this feature didn't happen to be significant for me.

Review: Mac Users Beware
by: Michael C. Sinclair on date: May 5, 2007
The Canon MF 4150 is not "multi-functional" when paired with a Mac computer. Canon offers "Mac" printer driver software on its website that-with some difficulty-can be configured to use the unit as a printer, but it does not support scanning or faxing from a Mac (OSX). Moreover, the Canon driver utility does not function under OSX. The Canon techs were no help, but admit that the 4150 does not allow scanning to a Mac. There is no warning on the Canon website, yet by offering the Mac driver software, Canon implies a compatability that isn't there. The 4150 will function as a stand-alone copier and fax machine, but documents cannot be faxed from the computer. I had a borrowed HP Laserjet #3105 multi-function unit that worked perfectly with the Mac, and replaced it with the Canon which was comparably priced with added feature of duplex printing. Big mistake.

Review: MECHANICAL DEFECTS WITH THIS DEVICE
by: R. Salazar on date: April 22, 2007
Mechanical defects such as "toner is not set", when cartridge is properly loaded make this device suspect and unreliable at best. Problems with cartridges. It seems other buyers are having same problem. I would not purchase. Also issue and difficulty with software and problems with installation on PC and MAC systems.

Review: Good Value for a Canon Printer
by: Howards Amazon Reviews on date: April 9, 2007
I bought this Canon MF4150 printer after my thirteen-year-old HP 4L bit the dust. The Canon MF4150 works great. You will need to purchase your own USB cable, but once you hook it up, you'll probably like this printer. It is fast, and the print quality is excellent. The copier also works great, as does the automatic feeder. Setup is quick too. The menus are pretty easy to navigate when setting this up. Replacement toner cartridges are a little pricey, but there should be some good deals out there on refurbished toner cartridges. All-in-all, this seems to be a good printer, offering good value.

Review: does NOT do double-sided copying!
by: J. Mallory on date: April 7, 2007
The description and specifications for this unit are very misleading:
it doesn't do duplex scanning and the "double-sided" copying function only means double-sided printing of single-side originals. Quick, quiet unit otherwise but, unfortunately, I bought it to do double-sided copying... It's going back to amazon.

Review: Disappointed and Frustrated
by: Benjamin Yao on date: April 7, 2007
I bought this printer because it's cheap but has all functions that I was looking for. More importantly, it has a very good reviews. However, the truth is that this model sucks and canon sucks.

When I received the printer, it had problem doing double sided printing. After the printer finished one side and it stopped when the paper was fed back for the other side. I tired many times, the printer always stuck at the same point. After a couple of calls, I found out the printer was defective. Amazon sent me a replacement.

When I received the second one, right after I powered on the printer, I got a error message "Toner is NOT set", even though the fresh from packing toner cartridge was in the printer. I tried a couple of times (took the cartridge out, and put it back in) and also used a different toner cartridge (the cartridge from the first printer), I got the same error message. I found out that this one is defective too after I contacted canon technical support.

Is it co-incident or just my bad luck?!

Finally, I decided to return the printer and get my money back. I used to have HP printers and I guess that I am going to stick with that.

I have to say amazon's customer services was very good during the whole process. At one point, I was gonna keep the printer and bring it to one of canon service centers to get it fixed 'cause I felt bad for amazon.

However, since I go to school in Canada and i bought the printer from US, I was told by canon that canon US and canon canada is totally different companies and I have to bring the printer back to US to get it fixed. Amazon, on the other hand, offered to send the replacement printer to my canadian address without any problems. The replacement was sent to my US address eventually cause I didnot want to pay high duty charge to canada customs.

Review: An excellent printer at a terrific price!
by: Alphalio on date: March 31, 2007
In the two months since I've purchased this printer, I have not had a single problem with it. The quality of the printing is fantastic, it is very fast and was a piece of cake to set up. If you're looking for a reasonably priced multi-function laser printer, with paper feeder for multi-page faxes, look no further than this printer.

Review: Very good
by: D. Begey on date: March 28, 2007
This is perfect for what I needed. Scanning and printing are both acceptably fast compared with the old separate printer and scanner I replaced this with. Output looks very good for an all-in-one in this price range.

Review: A great buy
by: Shreddin' Mike on date: March 10, 2007
I bought this for my one-person office, so there's no need for network connectivity. Installation was simple and straightforward on Windoze XP. I have used all the primary functions - copy, scan, fax, print - and I am extremely pleased with the results.

This is a fantastic deal. I have no idea how Canon makes any money on it...

Review: Works as Advertised
by: P. Kwan on date: March 9, 2007
I was shopping around for a general purpose laser printer to replace an older HP Laserjet for a home office and did a lot of research between the Brothers, HP, and Canon printers. The Canon MF4150 has the benefit of dual sided printing and it's very fast. Combined with the copier, fax, and scanning capabilities, I think the price I paid on Amazone with free shipping and no tax was the best value (bought in Feb 07).

The first page comes out within a few seconds after powering on the unit and the double sided printing works really well. The copier feature is great with the sheet feeder so you don't have to lift the cover for each individual sheet like some of the other products in its price range.

After using it for about a month, I'd highly recommend this printer. Hope this helps your decision.

Review: Cannon multifunction laser
by: Phil J on date: March 8, 2007
I have used the fax, print and copy functions, but not the scan function. The performance is great, especially the ability to copy 2-sided. Speed is good and print quality is high. This product uses black ink only. This is one of the main benefits to me since I do not print in color and did not want to mess with color cartridges. However, according to the literature, you can scan in color. One inconvenience is that the provided guide covers only the basic uses. For other uses, you have to refer to the guide that becomes installed on your PC when you run the installation CD. I had to use this guide when copying 2-sided.

I bought this two years after its release date (today is March 07) and with my XP home system EVERYTHING worked great, right out of the box. With my printer and fax replaced by this I have: 2 more feet of desk space, double sided printing, replacement hardware at less than half the cost of either of the machines it replaced, mature drivers, easy installation (still 2 hours for everything, duplex printing, warrenty, one touch buttons etc.) and a system that works as you would expect. I wish all computer experiences were like this!

Review: Perfect unit for a small office like mine.
by: Sushi Broker on date: March 1, 2007
I bought this unit with lots of skepticism: how could a small office appliance like this one do everything it does for such a low price? After several weeks of ownership, I am very impressed. It copies, faxes, prints, and scans like a much higher-priced product. The quality of all outputs is excellent and I'm picky. As a bonus, I also gained lots of extra desk real estate because I donated my other office 'boat anchors' to charity. Good job Canon!

Review: Two problems leading me to return it
by: David Gossett on date: March 1, 2007
I really like this printer in theory -- but am returning it, for two reasons. First, the good: it prints well, and does everything it says it will do well, is nicely designed, etc.

Now, the bad.

First, it won't work with an Airport Express print router (even just as a printer). The Brother MFC I need to replace would do so, and I guess I'm going to have to go back to Brother. (I didn't expect it to allow scanning wirelessly -- that entails data upstream rather than downstream -- but printing it should have been able to do. I've confirmed with Canon, however, that it will not work.)

Second, as others have said, I cannot get it to print duplex on a Mac. (It will duplex from my WinXP computer, but not from my Mac.) Really frustrating, as the Mac print driver has an option for duplex printing -- but it is always grayed out.

Review: High Quality Near- Business Class Machine
by: suetonius on date: February 21, 2007
I ordered this multifunction machine from Amazon after returning a Canon MF5770 that was unsatisfactory (to St*ples)For under two hundred wou get a lot of features in a solidly built machine. Copy works fine. The scanner function is very nice; I was able to scan a document with the sheet feeder and an image immediately popped up on my computer. The bundled scan software actually works; a first for me with multifunction machines. Printing was uneventful as it should be. Large paper capacity. Large toner capacity as expected with lasers. Highly recommended.

Review: Does what it claimed very well. nice little workhorse
by: Qian Guo on date: February 16, 2007
I have used several all-in-ones before, both inject and laser. from brother to HP, this is the best by far. summarize the pro's and con's:
Pro's
1. duplex printing is a great paper saving tool
2. complete silent at standby with fast start up
3. small foot print and compact
4. paper handling is smooth, rarely any paper jam, quite unusual for a cheap all in one under $200
Con's
1. initial menu setting is quick complicated, but just have to do it once, follow the menu
2. cartridge is about $10 more than the compareable HP or Brother ones, considering it doesn't need to replace drum unit, overall cost is about the same
3. no network built in, u got what u pay for.

I bought this machine for home office just two weeks back. Unpacking, installation was breeze. It is quiet and fast. Love this machine!

Review: This printer does everything.
by: johnny on date: February 4, 2007
Built in fax, scanner, copier, duplex, small form factor, looks great, prints fast and well built. I hooked this up for a relative, so I don't use it myself. Installed on Win 98 machine V1. Install did not successfully load the drivers, but I was able to manually install them. Comes with a starter toner catridge which Canon says lasts a 1000 pages. New toner is expensive and only last 2,000 pages. Does not have a lot of memory compared to the competion, but you can't touch anything like this for $190. Seems like a bargain to me.

Review: Ahead of the game
by: John T. Fields on date: February 3, 2007
Our office just went paperless and I finaly could get rid of the huge copier we were paying a monthly fee for. This machine meets all our needs for copying now as well as faxing. It was simple plug and play for these functions and has worked great so far. I feel I am ahead of the game since the purchase price of this machine is less than one month's lease payment on our previous copier. I highly recommend the mf4150.

Review: Scanner Frustrations
by: J. Lee on date: February 1, 2007
I'm on Windows XP Pro and still not able to scan. I think this is due to lack of a scanner driver. I emailed support so I will see what they say about it. The MF Toolbox scanner software also takes forever to load or respond at times.

Having some issues with getting Fax receive modes to work properly.

Printing and fax transmission is fine, I like the ADF. The machine came with a starter cartridge that has been lasting for me thus far. Overall I think I got a great deal on this machine, I just need to get all the features to work and then I'll be set.

Review: Incorrect list price
by: Grey Pash on date: January 31, 2007
List price on this printer is $249 not $695. Amazon's selling price is still a good deal, but not quite as good as this listing makes it appear.

Review: No love for Mac OS X
by: V. Q. Vu on date: January 26, 2007
This could've been a great printer, but Canon really dropped the ball with Mac OS X support. Most of the functionality of the device IS NOT available on Mac OS X. Duplex printing is NOT available. Scanning is NOT available. What's the point of selling a multi-function printer as Mac compatible if the multi-functions are not supported?

Review: MF 4151
by: M. Harp on date: January 22, 2007
Printer image is excellent.
Networking over a wireless router with a USB printer port works fine but this setup is not supported by Canon. This setup must be done by the add printer function and then choosing the proper driver. Scanning is then only available by switching to direct connection to the PC.
Scanning with document handler works well.
Copying is excellent.
Toner/Drum cartridges are priced very competetively: $75 w/shipping.

Review: Great printer

Great laser printer. Paper never jams. had great luck with canon's ink jet and laser seems just as reliable. great price too

Review: A Great Multi-Functional Unit!
by: Phyllis Rhodes on date: January 17, 2007
I recently purchased this printer in an effort to free up more space in my home office. I replaced my laser printer, scanner and fax with this single compact unit and couldn't be happier. As others have mentioned, the duplex printing feature is a MAJOR plus in my opinion - a feature that they've seemed to include as a "freebie" and adds major points over competitors. The quick start guide was really simple and I was up and running in a matter of minutes.

A super quiet machine when not in use (thanks to the Energy Saving feature), I've used the printing features and the results are timely, crisp, clean pages with seemingly excellent paper handling (no jams so far). It's got many more print options (2 on 1 page, 4 on 2 pages which is really 4 on 1 with the duplex option) and a ton of other cool features and capabilities that aren't listed in the product description. I have sent and received faxes without a problem. Copying is just like using the larger machines: just lift the cover or use the document feeder to copy originals. I haven't scanned anything yet, so I can't comment on that particular functionality, but the manual mentions scanning to PDF which is what I really need and like.

Size is truly relative - It is a bit larger (height and width) than my old laser printer (a Samsung); but does 4 times more work and its footprint is definitely smaller than the three units I replaced!

For less than $200 with free shipping, it's solved my space problems and exceeded my expectations regarding functionality and quality. A great deal, imo. I highly recommend!!

Review: Networking problem
by: George Sopp on date: January 7, 2007
After purchasing this printer ($195 on Amazon) I found out that adding it to my network requires the Axis 1650 network print server. I already own a print server but it would not work with multifunction printers and it seems no other multifunction print servers will work. (According to Canon and my quick research online.)

The only problem is the Axis 1650 is $180, which is almost as much as the printer itself. The other option is to attach it to a local PC and share it on the network. The would be great but I do not have a PC in the same room.

Review: Canon 4150 Just Right for Home Office/Home
by: B. Willnecker on date: December 26, 2006
I bought the Canon 4150 to replace an aging HP LaserJet 5L laser printer and an older and lower end HP Scanjet scanner. I could not be happier, especially considering the price. The printing speed is fantastic, the scanning works well. Duplex printing is a huge plus. Since this printer only has one USB port (no parallel ports), I found it useful to buy an external USB switch for connecting to more than one computer.

The integrated software on the HP was much better, despite being nearly 10 years old, but the HP also cost much more.

If you are in the market for a monochrome, multi-function laser printer, you should seriously consider this. Good price (<$200), and free shipping (at least at the time I bought it).

Review: Lots of features, compact, great price!
by: archtone on date: December 8, 2006
I bought this machine 2 weeks ago, after returning the Brother 7820. The Canon MF4150 is the perfect all-in-one machine for a home office. It does everything: faxing, copying, printing (including automatic duplex) and scanning. I like that it allows scanning straight to PDF. It's fairly quiet when it functions, although it uses enough power to cause some flickering of lights. I can overlook that because everything else about the machine is excellent; the print quality is great and it prints very quickly. The automatic feed works perfectly. The machine is very small and compact, too.

The manual contains basic information, and you have to rely on the CD-ROM to reference advanced features of the machine---and there are a LOT of features! It is truly amazing that you can buy a machine with so many features for this price! I am very happy with the Canon MF4150 and would recommend it to anyone looking for a black and white laser all-in-one.

Review: Terrible Mac OS Support!
by: A. Fung on date: November 20, 2006
This unit has all of the features that I wanted: scanner, document feeder, and duplex printing. Canon also has a reputation for good mac support. However, this printer has terrible Mac OS X support.

It comes with a USB 2.0 printer driver for OS X that works well with single sided printing, however there is no way to send two-sided print jobs. I know that the duplexer inside the printer works (I can make two-sided copies), but Canon's Mac software doesn't support two-sided printing. How hard can that be.

Second, there is no scanning software for this Canon unit. None at all. How hard could it be to include a TWAIN driver or some basic scan-to-tiff or scan-to-pdf support?

Finally, I could not get any news from Canon's customer support about when, or even if, their engineers were planning to support these features on their OS X driver. It would be nice to have some news on this front, and maybe to get on a beta test list.

Agh.

Review: Nice Machine - Happy So Far
by: J. Kim on date: November 18, 2006
I bought this printer after I found that 1) fewer and fewer places carry toner for my Samsung SF-555P Multi-function printer and 2) I really need duplex printing. This Canon machine is one of the few, if not only, product out there right now with dupex *and* multifunction built into a single monochrome laser unit.

This is a brand new model as of Novermber 2006. I had bought and returned a HP Laserjet 3055 multi-function unit, after I found that it does not have duplex built-in. I almost bought a dupex laser printer from brother, HL-5250DN, for about the same amount of money (~$200).

This Canon unit has energy saver feature so it is very quiet when not in use. I liked the printer driver. It is easy to use and uses the same type of user interface as the one found in my Canon i860 ink printer. And, yes, it has duplex printing!!!!

Since I have only had the printer for a week, I have not used it extensively but evrything seems to work well. Its footprint is bigger than my old samsung unit but still relatively small, despite it has a cover and an automatic feeder for copying. I like how it does not have a built-in phone; I can always hook up a cheap phone if I wanted to. A built-in phone would make the unit less pleasing to the eye. It is a very pretty machine (boy, am I a geek). I like how I can now pull up the cover, set down a store receipt and copy with a push of a single button.

The only downside is that once the starter toner is all used up, a regular replacement toner is good for 2000 pages, as opposed to 3000 pages, which is what other manufacturers typically rate their replacement toners for. But I think even with a 3000 page toner, I replaced toners once every other year so this shouldn't be too big a deal.

I am all set for the next year's tax filing. Bring it on!
